My System:

ASUS Sabertooth 990fx 2.0
AMD 8320 @ 3.5Ghz (stock)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
CoolerMaster Hyper D92
CoolerMaster 750 Power Source
16GB 1333 DDR 3 SDRAM

Off the bat, I'm not really wanting to transition into liquid cooling if unnecessary and I just bought the Hyper D92 so, lets pretend upgrading anything at this point is out of the question.

I can say that I've had the chip for over 1.5 years and have been pleased. The stock CPU fan wasn't cutting it anymore and replaced with the D92. Not sure if I need to OC for my end use (see below), but I'm currently manually set for 3.9Ghz and my thermals are over range (73C CPU Core after 4 to 6 min Small FFTs in Prime), but I hesitate to continue P95 and stop the process. Should I let continue until failure?

Anyway, I'd like to see at least 4.0Ghz or even 4.2Ghz with stable temps (ideally in the 54 to 58 range) as I'll be rendering 3D assets in Blender for use in Unity 5.

I can provide more info if needed, but I have followed through the recommended settings and am overheating at 3.9Ghz overclocked from 3.5Ghz stock.

Are there other settings that can be adjusted in BIOS to bring my thermals under control?

Any help would be great!

Cheers!

The Coolermaster D92 isn't a very good cooler but it should be good for at least 4.2 ghz on a 8320. Its big brother 212 is usually good for 4.5. Your overheating problem could lie elsewhere.

What case are you using? How many and of what size are the case fans? If the case is not moving the hot air out then the cooler is just reusing the hot air and making it hotter.

I have an Antec case (P-100 I think) that is running 4 chassis fans
1 Front / Intake @ 120mm & 1200rpm
2 Top / Exhaust @ 140mm & approx 1000rpm
1 Rear / Exhaust @ 120mm & 1200rpm

I play Dota 2 and a few isometric RPGs. I don't really own any games that are taxing on my system so, I'm running a Blend in Prime95 currently.

It's 9:15am CST and I'm 20 minutes into the Prime Blend.

I thought my thermals were stable at 57C, but I've seen a slow increase and am sitting at 61C and...

23 minutes in I have a couple workers failing.

What does this mean? Where should I go from here?

I can provide BIOS settings if needed.

I looked at pics of the Antec 100 case and they show only one top fan, not two. A top/rear exhaust fan is not needed and if you have a top/front fan it should be an intake so fresh air is blowing on the ram and cpu cooler intake.

That looks like a big well laid out case. Could it be possible to ghetto rig an intake fan in the front/top for more intake going to the cpu? Something like this.

Do you have a usb stick? You can plug one of those in and take pics of your bios. They look something like this.

Anyhoo, if you are overheating at 1.2 vcore you have serious cooling problems. Is the cooler seated properly? What thermal paste did you use? A new cooler would be an option in any case as that one is really too small for an 8320. A twin tower air cooler will work wonders.

Here is a link to the exact case:

http://www.antec.com/product.php?id=706702&fid=5022020&lan=nz

I can take the rear exhaust and place in front for more intake indeed.

I'm sitting at 4.013GHz for daily operations. I have cores fail in P95 but I don't know if that means I should stop altogether or continue to let the Blend run.

As far as the small FFT's test on P95, I was able to get 10 minutes in, which is a good first coarse tuning measure according to another thread in the forums here, with stable thermals below 62C for the core.

When I ran the Blend, my thermals slowly would rise but, as I've mentioned, I stopped the test since I figured I wanted stability across all cores.

Anyway, I do have an USB. Just plug in and it takes shots automatically or do I need to do something?

I'm checking this thread and raising two kids so, I won't have time to look up processes for USB pic taking until later...

Ah, that is not the case I looked at. It looks like it is set up for silence over air flow. More and especially better fans will help with cooling.

To take bios pics plug the usb stick in, go into the bios, and hit F12 to take a pic.

If cores fail it means it is not stable yet. Also, as temperatures rise it becomes less stable so that what might be good at a lower temperature will be no good at higher temperatures.

All of your information is amazing!

I'm stable currently @ 4.0GHz during a 10min Small FFTs run in Prime 95.
Thermals did reach 65C and I did get the ASUS warning, but when I removed the side of the case, I dropped 2C and stabilized there.
No core failure either.

Onto the blend I suppose for 6 -12 hours?

I'm following another thread in this forum that mentions my setup but moves into an 8350 conversation where liquid cooling became the fix so I do appreciate your help.

I think a case optimized for airflow and cooling over noise would be worth considering. Any suggestions?

If its not to much to ask can you install hwinfo64 and take a screen shot of the what it report, upon running hwinfo64 when it prompts you, run sensors only then click disable this sensor (asus ec).

Put small fans on the heatsink of that Kitty. Also use AMD Overdrive as it shows the temperature accurately and even shows how far you have to go to safe max (which is 70C).
