Per the actual agreement now, and enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (I believe), Intel has to negotiate in "Good Faith" licensing to any new owners of AMD. Also the U.S. Government reserves the right to dictate what is considered "Good faith", in order to help ensure the license does happen.

So we as the consumer are actually safe.

Interesting, thank you.

Problem is this:
In previous years, AMD eluded the problem by selling off assets.
They started by selling off fabs, then they took very big debts on their future earnings, then they sold off their assembly facility.
Each time they made a deal, they got a lot of cash.
But the assets run out. Deals are ending. There will not be any more big incomes.

If zen really goes well, they will still not be able to mass the billion ++ they need to pay off the huge debt coming.
So if their stock prices goes up well enough, they will be able to attract new investors, delude some stocks, and sell them in return for cash from that investor. That way they will be able to get rid of the debt, and with positive income, they can be a strong competitor in the market.

That of course, requires that both polaris and zen really live up to their potential. People are very skeptic, and rightly so with all the last years AMD showed little success. But they are patient enough to see how polaris and zen are going to do. I'm sure with the first hints of problems, the calls inside AMD board will be to bail out as fast as they can.

Yes, and we appreciate having you around! You have been more than handy a few times in these discussions!

Wouldn't the issue be that Samsung may have no interest in the x86 license, so they just opt out of the cross licensing with Intel and force Intel to quit using x86 licenses held by AMD (ie x86-64)?

Hiring a new CEO at a premium isn't giving the CEO a pay raise.

Their product wouldn't be viable without x86.

The point would be that Samsung has zero interest in making any x86 CPUs since their focus is ARM and the mobile sector. They would simply shelve the whole operation and with it cut off Intel from AMD's x86 licenses.
