Overclocking on the MSI B85m Gaming?

Good day,

I'm interested if it would be possible to overclock a 4690k or even a 4790k using the B85m gaming. I know it can overclock a G3258, but I'm not sure if it will even work with the 4690k, even with BIOS updates.

I currently have this board paired with a 4460, and I was just wondering what upgrade options I have down the line. Not planning to overclock soon, just plain curious.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have the MSI B85-G43 GAMING, so basically the ATX version of your board. I have a 4790K overclocked to 4.7 Ghz stable.
That might help you. smile.gif

woah, thanks man. smile.gif I didn't realize that the B85-G43 is just the ATX version of my board. XD. i guess i can try it when the time comes to upgrade my current rig. that's gonna save me a bit of money.

did you do a BIOS update to overclock by the way? I'm not sure of the BIOS version on mine (currently at work), but I think it's on the latest version since I can run a 4460 on it.

No. I have the latest Bios update from April 2015, but it also worked before. Just some things:
First, your board is mATX so that means you might have less voltage regulators and they are less cooled, meaning you might not be able to overclock that high. However. If you have a 4790K it: first of all, it will automatically run 4.4 Ghz on all cores, second, you should be able to run it at 4.5 Ghz all cores with everything on Auto just by changing the CPU Ratio to 45. Everything above, you will have to manually change VCore. Depending on how good your chip is, you might try 1.250 or 1.255 (in my case) VCore for 4.6 Ghz. and so on. Since you are on mATX it might mean you have a small case, so cooling is also a very important and limiting factor, remember that smile.gif

Second thing: Stick with DDR3 1600. Although your (and my) board supports the X.M.P profile for High Speed DDR3, we are still limited to DDR3 1600 due to the restriction of the B85 Chipset.

Hope that helps you smile.gif

yup, I kinda figured I can't throttle it as much since it's a smaller board.

and thanks a lot for the tips! i'm planning to upgrade in about a year or so, and i'll keep those in mind. thanks again!
