Need help determining Haswell or Skylake for a laptop purchase

Hi guys,

I was planning on getting the MSI Ge62 Apache Pro-001 for $1499 off XoticPC and then came across the barebones 16H5 which is a whole $300 cheaper.

The laptop specs:

MSI 16H5
15.6" FHD Matte Screen
Intel Haswell i7-4720HQ
NVIDIA® GTX 970M [6GB]
2x8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
2 x 128GB M.2 SSD + 1TB HDD
http://www.xoticpc.com/force-msi-16h5-22-445-970m-msi-gs60-barebones.html

MSI Ge62 Apache Pro-001
15.6" FHD Matte Screen
Intel® Skylake i7-6700HQ
NVIDIA® GTX 970M [3GB]
2x8GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM
128GB M.2 SSD + 1TB HDD
http://www.xoticpc.com/msi-ge62-apache-pro001-p-8590.html

My concerns are that the 16H5 is thinner than the Ge62 and is running a Haswell which from what I have read runs quite a lot warmer than the new Skylake processors. The 16H5 seems like a steal to me comparatively. Does anyone have any experience with the 16H5 or I guess the GS60? And what would you'll recommend? Is Skylake worth the $300? Also have to consider I would be paying about $200 for International shipping.

Thanks.

Well with the Skylake platform you are getting PCI-e NVMe SSD's or based connections for them vs old Sata3 style performance in the 2x m.2 ssd's in the barebones. Personally I would get the new platform because those ssd's are 10 times faster or have the capability to be than the Sata3 ssd's. NVMe SSD's are the new best thing and I wouldn't want to not get that now and be stuck on the old tech for the next 3 or so years that you will be using this new laptop you buy.

I have the new MSI GT72 Dominator-019 that was $1499 at Microcenter and that laptop is a BEAST with the 6820K Cpu that overclocks to 4ghz with no problems at all and it's faster than the desktop 4770K cpu @ 4.4ghz in Cinebench R15 multi cpu test. I'd look at that option too if you want some serious Cpu power to back up your 970m, which is what is in my Gt72 as well. Take a look at that, but I'd definitely stick with the Skylake platform if I were you for the other options you are getting from it.

As far as cpu's go, the 6700HQ is just about the same performance as the 4720HQ, but the 6820K is about 20-25% faster than both and also can overclock as high as you are willing to take for noise coming from your fans to keep it cool. I chose to run 4ghz with no added voltage and the fans are silent in my GT72 so it's a total win for me there.

Hope this helps. But for sure stick with the MSI brand. Their laptops are way better than the other brands out there now especially Asus's garbage they are making right now.

Thanks for the insight. Definitely helped! I would very much like to go with the GT72 however its just too large and heavy for my daily carry. I will stick with the Skylake platform though. I am looking at other options to order from as XoticPC seems like a time consuming ordeal and I am on a limited time frame. Microcenter doesn't ship internationally so I would probably use Aramex's Shop and Ship to forward the package to Dubai.
