[PCWorld] Jim Keller lands at Tesla to head up Autopilot group - Page 4

Well, if it doesn't make any sense maybe the reason behind it isn't production or developing costs but ROI? Imagine that they have the autopilot thing figured out and they only need a black box to drive it leaving the rest of the industry in the dark.

If being successful was simply following the "only do it if it makes sense" strategy, everyone would be successful.

5 even 10 years ago, "wasting" money on rocket scientists and engineers seemed like flushing money down the drain. Now that NASA is slow, even by NASA standards, in getting a new rocket going, the payoff seems well in sight.

With the amount of money, organization building, technology investments being made by Musk and a few others, you have to have a 10+ year outlook.

Everyone will laugh at a "hyper loop" now, but in 10 or 15 years when you're going from Dallas to LA in a few hours for $20, who will be laughing?

What would people rather he invest in? Dumb iphone apps?

My mind is blown just thinking about Jim Keller and Elon Musk working together. Surely these are two of the smartest people alive today.

Why don't they all just freakin' join forces and band together?

This really is absurd when you think about it. rolleyes.gif

If I were a Billionaire, I would be throwing stacks of cash at Musk and his companies. Even full well knowing that I probably wouldn't see a return on any of it in my lifetime. Often just setting the ball in motion is the biggest loss, hardest to do, but the most important. Yet, because of not seeing a return, those in a position to do it won't - it is something of the selfish nature of humans.

While Musk, obviously, likes his money. He comes across as a person who would be willing to lose it all, just to advance the world for his own kids.

Musk wants to make money and he thinks he's investing it where he will, that's all. He could very well be wrong and lose it all, or one of his ventures could get big. I am sure mining space and occupying meteors and planets rich in ore could be on his mind with SpaceX, not advancing the world. You know the dystopian science fiction where mega corporations dominate space? How do you know his agenda isn't being on the ground floor so it's his company in that position? People need to quit worshiping fallible humans.

You make him sound like Ozymandias.

He's one of the few people that get super rich and use their money and influence to better the world; in his case, its pushing for high tech solutions to problems we should have solved 50 years ago but were squashed by the same mega corporations whose descendants you described.

Oh, I don't know......maybe I get the idea he is about advancing technology because that is literally what he is doing, and things like this......

https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20150217/06182930052/elon-musk-clarifies-that-teslas-patents-really-are-free-investor-absolutely-freaks-out.shtml

Musk: We actually don't require any formal discussions. So they can just go ahead and use them.

Reporter: Is there a licensing process?

Musk: No. You just use them. Which I think is better because then we don't need to get into any kind of discussions or whatever. So we don't know. I think you'll see it in the cars that come out, should they choose to use them.

The Patents he owns are up for free use; as he has said many times, technology needs to advance.
