Alphacool Heatsink shorted my DDC?

I recently bought an alphacool DDC 310 with heatsink

However, I lifted up the pump and notice that the thermal pad had two pieces of plastic on it that I forgot to remove.

I proceeded to remove the clear plastic off the thermal pad then put the pump back together. I tested it again but this time it started up then completely died and I smelt a faint burnt smell. I thought it was just the pump so I put my EK ddc in and the same thing happened. It killed two of my ddcs.

Has anyone had any problem with the alphacool heatsink? Is the thermal pad conductive or something? It was working completely fine until I removed the plastic cover and only had thermal pad contact directly on the pump and heatsink instead of plastic wrap between
