Never ever did I have a power surge so I doubt it.
But yes I just came from my friend's place , he has asrock 970 extreme4 with athlon x3 something , and I tried my FX into his asrock and the motherboard showed 00 code on mobo's LED display where I read it means an CPU related problem. I tried his athlon x3 into my MSI 990FXA and the same thing happens with my FX , mobo won't start at all when the CPU pins are connected.
I mean what the hell? What does this mean? That both my mobo and cpu are dead??? How the hell did this happen?

Note : I tried his processor on my motherboard with only processor , no RAM , no hard disk , no gpu , just the processor was plugged in. Not sure if that makes any difference , i don't think mobo needs RAM , HDD or GPU to start up

When a motherboard blows it has been known to take the cpu with it, but those are usually weaker boards that are being overclocked. The GD80 is a stout board that should not just pop and take the cpu with it.

The times mine has given a black screen and the flashing light it was the cpu kicking in the OCP and shutting it down.. I've done that to it over a dozen times and it's still working. See if you can get it working with that other cpu.

In order to POST, you need CPU, GPU and at least 1 stick of RAM.

Well I just tried to boot the motherboard without the CPU and the CPU power PIN's plugged in. After I pressed the start button on mobo a chip above the CPU socket shorted out and it smells like it's burned. Not sure if it was smart to start mobo without CPU but I doubt it should shorted out anything... So I can kiss my motherboard goodbye , only thing left to do is to confirm the CPU is not dead as well... Can't believe that this happened , like too much power came through the motherboard with the new PSU..

EDIT : The mobo still works with 24 pin power plugged in only , LED shows FF , and LED's CPU phase 1 and 2 are on along with NB Phase 1 .

Yeah unfortunately , but how did this happen? Was it because I overclocked? It was running stable for a month and all of a sudden it died on me... I thought this was a good board to do overclock on :/

How did it happen? No idea. Stuff happens.

I have had 3 GD80s clocked to 4.9-5 ghz and only one of them failed and it was the internet part that quit working. I was having troubles with a 9590 @ 5 ghz and MSI volunteered to RMA the board just to check it out. They sent me another one back and it lost the internet. RMA. That one ran fine until I pulled it for another board a few weeks ago. It turns out that the 9590 was slowly failing.

It was probably a bad part that eventually failed over time in your case. The smell is the clue.

Yeah it makes sense , guess when it comes to components you're never sure what and how it happened. I see you're on Sabertooth 990fx right? How does that mobo serve you compared to GD80? As that's the one i'm planning on buying now.

How do the two boards compare? The GD80 has a simpler easier to use bios and runs cooler. The Saberrtooth is able to achieve higher overclocks but VRM temperatures must be watched. The bios is complicated enough that you will probably need some guidance getting it dialed in well. I did.

Placing both boards side by side and comparing them point by point the GD80 is the better board. It's the little things like the led, the cmos reset button on the I/O panel, the location of the plug that the front panel cable plugs into, the locks holding the video card in, even the location of the CPU socket is slightly different and yet it is quite noticeably easier to mount a twin tower cooler on the GD80. But the biggest thing is the VRM heat sink. The GD80 wins hands down there.

I'm not saying the Sabertooth is a bad board, but I am saying there is lots of room for improvement. You will be quite happy with it once you get it set up.
