[(Re)BUILD LOG] CFRP Phase 2.0 - Define R4 CLC aesthetic makeover

CFRP - Computer.For.Recreational.Purposes
LAST UPDATE: 01/29/2016
*Full disclosure: I love carbon fiber (or rather carbon fiber reinforced plastic, CFRP)... probably a little too much.

(PCPP Page)
*This is not a sponsored build. That being said, I am open to sponsorship opportunities.

PHASE 1.0 - Complete . (Click to show)
You may be asking what was Phase 1? Phase 1 is basically everything I have done up to this point. I didn't do a build log as I didn't feel like I would be providing information that hasn't been covered a thousand times before. That being said, below is a list of all the modifications I have done with some small anecdotes.

Performance modifications:

1. Full custom loop setup CPU/GPU
- (Loool I did so much wrong)
2. Delid 4790K and applied CLU to die and IHS
- (FFS this is a PIA without proper equipment/technique)
3. Applied CLU to 980 Ti
- (Not really worth it -5C drop in temps. Although temps drop rapidly after load, ie, CLU doesn't absorb heat, which is nice)
4. Applied FujiPoly thermal pads to 980 Ti
- (Pretty expensive stuff. It also dries out VERY easily. Meh.)
5. Installed water temp sensor
- (Should be a part of every custom loop)
6. Complete PWM mapping to water temp
- (Water is what the fans are cooling so this is a must)
7. Rubber washers and/or adhesive foam on all fan/rad/case and HDDs contact points
- ($5 mod that has terrific results)
8. Attached H240-X with 2 screws and velcro
- (not sure how this is performance tongue.gif )
9. Push/pull and both rads
- (probably not needed on my H240-X but definitely an improvement for the Alphacool XT45)

Aesthetic modifications:
1. Vinyl wrapped exterior and interior of Define R4
- (this was done a while ago and likely needs reapplication)
2. Flipped Swiftech H2240-X so res is outward facing on the bottom and redid tubing lines
3. Located both HDDs in top bay with rubber bands
- (I can't believe how well this worked)
4. Sleeved PrimoChill Advanced LRT tubing with PrimoChill Kobra Max carbon fiber sleeving
- (I messed this up by not putting the sleeving under the fittings. Since I have no fill port or quick releases... redoing this will be a PIA)
5. Better cable management (It was needed. Gorilla glue tape is your friend.)
6. White cold cathode lighting (Somebody needs to make a better cold cathode kit with longer cords, a smaller inverter and SATA power)

PHASE 2.0 - In progress

Build Goals:
Quote:
The the primary goal of phase 2 is a comprehensive aesthetic makeover on a budget (YMMV on the definition of "budget"), which is something I don't see too often. My goal is to attempt to greatly increase the aesthetic appeal of my build for around $100 (USD) (does not include stuff I already own. If I am gifted an item, I will include its retail cost.). Right now my build is "nice" but it is certainly not "clean". If my budget permits, I would also like to integrate some automotive themed styling cues. However, the majority of these are more "finishing touches" and will likely fall to phase 3 and be a new budget. At the end of the day, I want to end up with an almost unrecognizable Define R4.

Thread Goals:
Quote:
1. There are some ideas I have that I would like your feedback on. I will highlight those specific ideas below. Please feel free to respond to these at your leisure. It would help me stay organized if you replied with the title and number to the corresponding section you are commenting on (not required).
2. I also intend to highlight my experiences with the products and companies I utilize.
3. It is my intention to provide, at a minimum, weekly updates on my progress and respond to as many questions/comments/suggestions as I can. I will always update major progress in the thread and in the OP.
4. Finally, if all goes well, I hope this thread is a place of inspiration for those who want to improve the look of their build, but don't want to spend a lot of money (hint: vinyl is God). Once my update is complete, expect a nice DSLR photoshoot.

Planned Modifications:
Quote:
1. Custom acrylic/vinyl bottom case/PSU shroud (inspiration)
2. Custom GPU backplate by V1 Tech (Proposed design)
3. Custom cut vinyl wrap to transform my PNY XLR8 (DDR3) ram into imitation G.Skill TridentZ (DDR4)
4. Rear mobo illumination (red)
5. GPU backplate side illumination (white or red)
6. Bottom case/PSU shroud illumination TBD (white or red) (also cold cathode)
7. Extra sound dampening (locations TBD)
8. Back side panel with all brand logo decals
*Yes... ~$100

Feedback: - Phase 2.0
Quote:
1. Should I vent (IE drill holes) the top of my PSU shroud? If yes, should I possibly try louvered vents?
2. Or should I leave it solid and completely sound dampen this area?
3. If I can get the PSU shroud to have a curved edge, should I? (vs 90 degree angle)
4. Any tips for achieving this illumination effect on a GPU backplate? My plan is to use an LED strip at the back of the GPU backplate and let it shine through.
5. Currently accepting alternative RAM design ideas. Show me the coolest looking ram sticks!
6. For the bottom case illumination I am think of doing maybe some logos (EVGA, Asus and or Fractal Design). Overall, what do you think I should do with this space? Other ideas like this? SSD mount?
7. Is it worth extending my custom shroud to cove the entirety of the H240-X and the 5.25 inch bays (thinking ahead to full transparent side panel)?
8. Should I paint my Noctua rubber pads red or black?
9. Please feel free to make your own suggestions for other mods I should attempt. The only rules are it must be "cheap" and feasible to create with minimal specialty tools.

PHASE 3.0 - Planned

Potential/Future Modifications:
. (Click to show)
1. Custom cut full acrylic side panel window (tempered glass panel imitation) (w/magnetic attachment, sound dampening, custom vinyl sections)
2. Custom illuminated fan shrouds by V1 Tech
3. Custom Swiftech CPU block plate featuring Intel Skull and OC.net logo pattern by V1 Tech or PPC
4. LCD telemetry read out integrated into bottom shroud (Clocks, temps, time, etc)
5. Reapply sleeving to water tubing to semi transparent smoke white color(PIA)
6. RGB illuminated water tubing (white to red glow)
7. Install quick release and fill/drain port
8. NZXT HUE
9. Headphone stand
10. Thanos infinity gauntlet
I am open suggestions...

Gallery - Status: Phase 0.5-ish Will update with embedded photos. Imgur link for now. (Click to show) *Gallery will be updated with images as modifications are complete

Future Build Plans:
I will likely stay with this build for some time. My plan is to wait until 2 way SLI XX80 Ti Pascal and Intel's next architecture HEDT chip, hopefully with Optane, before I do a new build. However, when I do, I have plans for it to be quite epic. My main inspiration will be this: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Backplate design:

The carbon fiber pattern would eventually get this type of finish:
CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 90

The red sections would be illuminated.

The gray section on the front of the backplate are NACA ducts to draw a little air under the backplate to the silicon.

Thoughts?

Super super rough and ugly, but this is what I am going for with the fan grille:

Rough sketch of final design (Colors are not final and are meant to represent shape)*

Notes:
- The white area will be acrylic not covered by vinyl wrap and be lit by RGB LEDs from the back of the acrylic pieces.
- Window will be tinted
- Fans will have an outer shroud (that also covers the brown pads), but nothing infront of the fan surface)
- There will be vented slats on the shroud above the location of the 140mm bottom fan
- RAM will have a semi ghetto cover that will make it look like there are 3 sticks... still thinking this one through...
- SSD will behind a flat piece of acrylic with a small window (rest vinyl wrapped)
- Still working on an integrated way to add EVGA and Asus logos to the PSU shroud. Taking suggestions...

One thing I cannot decide on is connecting the illuminated acrylic strip or leaving it as it is (not connected). Thoughts?

Shot of current build without Ps:
