Potential GPU overheat, no boot, video tdr failure?

Just finished buiding a PC.
S340 Case NZXT
asus z170 a mobo - kraken x61
gskill 4x4gb 2400mhz
750w corsair modular psu
asus gtx 970 - kraken x31. got everything installed and running fine yesterday. started playing tomb raider which came with my gpu for free, no problems. this morning i booted up the rig and started playing again. after 10-15 min i paused the game and left the room. when i came back the screen was black and my system will no longer boot into windows, displaying only video tdr failure error. stable gpu temp of ~40°C before leaving room

i tried to reinstall the drivers but hasnt seemed to help, any info would be of great help! thanks

Try the GPU in a different system?

Also, what version of the BIOS are you running? If it's an older version consider updating it. Looking at Asus' support page, there appears to have been 7 updates, all memory and system stability related:
