Thanks to my friend for the video of this rare machine. It uses full size SD cards instead the expensive and intentionally proprietary Sony memory cards that helped doom this system. Many great features were removed because they wanted to limit the consumer to their proprietary accessories.

I don't think anyone have ever made a video on the real prototype before.

That SD card slot though...

i look forward to the day Vita goes on fire sale for $99...I can see it happening within the next year or two.

There simply isn't a market in North America...proprietary card and minimal developers sealed its fate not that far into its cycle.

Here's hoping a real cfw comes out of the woodwork. The Vita could have been awesome.

This. Even at pawn shops it's more expensive than a Wii and not far from a PS3.

Depends. I've got like 12 games for it, so for me, it wasnt a waste of money, as i have tons to play on it. If you dont see any games you would like on it, it is probably a waste, as there arent any more AAA titles coming for it. It is mostly for Japanese games in the future.

From the day it was announced I couldn't ever help but think that it would be more compelling if it could run Android software...even the slider form-factor of that prototype would have been useful as a sort of phone/tablet/gaming-handheld hybrid.

However, you wouldn't want to run Android as the native OS and limit the games to Android's capabilities (see Xperia Play), but rather do a sort of hypervisor kind of thing like the Xbox One does - I mean the Vita has 4 cores, so surely you can dedicate 1 to an Android hypervisor in the background while games are running or something (and then allow 2-3 cores for the Android hypervisor if the game is paused and then 3-4 if the game isn't even running).

The people who want it on sale for $99 or think that it's more expensive than a Wii or PS3 aren't looking hard enough.

I got a Vita 1000 lately with 3 games (that I wanted) and an 8GB memory card and charger for $150 on Ebay. Just the 3 games and memory card alone would have cost nearly $100 separately.

I also got a PSTV with a Dual Shock 3 and charger cable bundle for under $40. If you hack the PSTV you can make it run ANY Vita game. All the games I have are supported by it anyway.

I have around 13 games for it and pretty much all of them are Japanese. Stuff like Toukiden Kiwami, Soul Sacrifice, Tales of Hearts R, Dragon's Crown and Ys. It's the same demographic/idea as the PSP was, lots of exclusive Japanese games. If all you like is Call of Duty and Battlefield and Assassin's Creed then don't bother. It's a niche system, just like the PSP was. I prefer Japanese games so it's pretty good for me.

I also have a fat PSP-1001 and a PSP GO with 32gb storage.

The Vita is nice but unfortunately, if you aren't familiar with the games for it I wouldn't recommend it, especially not over a PSP GO. Keep your PSP GO and CFW. There's a much larger, more diverse library for the PSP, especially if you don't like jrpgs or Monster Hunter style games. Also, running emulators on the PSP is MUCH MUCH easier. I did hack my PSTV and Vita to add PSP CFW but it's a huge PITA to transfer games. And now, it's been patched out of the firmware with FW 3.57. I literally have to run my Vita and PSTV through a proxy on my computer to even OPEN any games at all when the thing is connected to the internet because it will refuse to do basically anything and present me with a "You must update" prompt. (And if I do, I lose the ability to run homebrew off CFW.)

The Go/original PSP are basically the ultimate portable emulator machine and it also has a nice selection of RPGs, Monster Hunter type games, action games, puzzle games and even some fan translations. A lot of good exclusives in the PSP library.

If you really wanna play Vita games I'd recommend getting a PSTV if you don't care about portability. It's much cheaper ($30 used). Just don't buy any games that make exclusive use of the touch screen. (Though I've heard a Dual Shock 4's touchscreen will allow you to play these if you use the DS4 on the PSTV.)

I still have my PSP, loaded up with PS1 games, the best PSP games, and emulators.

Haven't touched it in awhile. But it is the PSP Slim, and works great. Have a Micro SD card in it using an adapter. Holds everything I need it to.

My First PSP was the Original, which I owned from almost day one. Starting off with the original Firmware, and had a custom firmware on it from the day they came out.

The PSP was only great because of the things you could do with a Custom Firmware. Loading up FF9 or 7 on the road is still awesome.

Sadly trying to get an original sony battery brand new is costly. And Generic ones can be a hit or a miss.

Vita is crap compared to what the PSP was.

The 3DS has so many great games, in which you could easily own 25+ games for the device no problem. Why would anyone go the Vita route.

Well, I have both. I've got a 3DS XL, two PSPs and a Vita.

If I had to pick between any of them I'd take the PSP for sure simply because of emulation and PS1 games.

The only reason I got a Vita is because there's quite a few games for it I wanted to play that aren't on any other system.

An old co-worker of mine spent a great deal of time and care to greatly modify his Sony handheld (honestly don't remember which version). The things he could do on it were pretty damn amazing, especially for it being about 7 years ago.

Sony could have done something amazing, but really gimped the machine out of the box.

Wow. It took SD Cards and had a Mini HDMI port?

I think one of the issues was that developers didnt want a repeat of the hacked PSP scenario. But thats still only one issue.

I have like 3 PSP-1000's that Ive collected from my friends that no longer played theirs and am currently looking for a PSP 3000 for...reasons. I own maybe 6 games for the Vita, most of them not developed in "the west".

The CFW's ability to play pirated iso/rom is what helped to raise psp sales in poorer countries.

A PSP-2000 or up can even emulate CPS2 games perfectly, and late Neo Geo games with some fantastic emulators that were coded by a Japanese guy and translated.

The original PSP only had 32MB RAM but the PSP 2000, 3000 and Go have 64MB which allows these emulators to work. Some of the Neo Geo roms are quite big and won't fit in memory on a PSP-1000. Even then, I think the last Metal Slug to work in Neo Geo is Metal Slug 3 because the later ones are just too big to fit in PSP RAM.

It's pretty awesome to be able to play D&D Tower of Doom and Shadow of Mystara on a portable system.

I even have a Cave FBA emulator that will run Espgaluda, Dodonpachi Daioujou and Ketsui in tate mode (you rotate the PSP and hold it vertically to play; this is the correct aspect ratio for vertical shooters in the actual arcade cabinets.) (These are Japanese shmups.)

It takes like 3x as much work to get this stuff going on a Vita and you are basically required to buy games from the PS store that have an exploit in them to even get them running on a Vita. You also have to do it twice. I did the TN-V exploit in Mimana Iyar Chronicle for the PSP games, and then found out I need to do a different game and exploit to get the PSP emulators working (through VHBL).

I'll probably just stick with my PSP GO for emulators.

Spent many hours with my PSP's back in the day. Still have my two PSP-1000's and my PSP-2000, all with CFW. So many great games on it and if you had CFW you could do so much ridiculous stuff on there. I remember I had this music plugin which allowed me to play any of my music off the memory stick in any game I wanted to, and it even had an extra feature that let me overclock the system's CPU from 222mhz to 333mhz (or even underclock it to improve battery life in the XMB, for example) if I wanted to. You could install countless emulators on it and even expand the multimedia capabilities. I remember with the PSP-1000 you could do crazy stuff with the IR receiver on it. Damn man...

It's ironic how the ease of hacking a PSP actually contributed to its success, but Sony's decision to try to make the Vita as anti-hackable as possible doomed the console itself. Third-party developers all but abandoned the system including their whole first-party division for the most part and now it's just a glorified companion device to the PS4. A damn shame considering how good the hardware of the Vita is.

Man I have a 3G Launch Vita myself and I'm quite disappointed at the available games.

I am looking forward to picking up a Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 game when it comes out for the vita

Why the Vita? Pick up the PS4 version because it has better graphics + use in larger screen.

or some of us simply don't care enough...if it goes for $99 new then sure i'll try it as a PS4 companion/occasional Japanese game.

The fact that I can get 128GB microSD for $35 means I have nearly zero interest in Vita and Sony's proprietary crap...and I say this as someone who owns their flagship camera and phone with Sony goods in the household dating back 30 years.
