Intel G3258 with Z97 motherboard confused about memory speeds...

Thread Starter
I have an intel G3258 CPU, a Z97 motherboard, and Kingston Savage 2400 Mhz RAM, the thing is i thought that the Intel G 3258 could only use up to 1333 Mhz RAM (mine should have been downclocked for example), from intel specs, but i seem to have them run just great at 1600 Mhz... I'm even more confused since i ended up looking at the Guru3D review of the Intel 3258G and i saw them with 2133 Mhz memory.... So... which is it ? Can i get them to work with higher frequency ram or not ?

It depends on what the motherboard supports.

The motherboard extends the support somehow. That's why motherboard show what speed memory they support.

I can't believe i'm using my RAM at 2400 Mhz and i can actually notice the difference, with my FX4300 there was no difference up till 2000Mhz... Nice that you can get them to work despite not being officially supported.

Wow. Nice! smile.gif

Yeah, I don't know the specifics of how enthusiast motherboards like these extend the support, but I'm extremely glad that they do!

Yup, I also have one more question, I only got a stable 4.2 ghz oc on my Intel G3258 at 1.35v, is that safe for daily use and gaming? Temps are 30c for idle, 50c for normal load and in the 60c for heavy load, stress test with prime95 did not take it over 72c.

That's over my head. I'm sorry. I do know one thing though: 72°C is not the maximum safe core temperature. It's merely the T-Case specification, and they get this specification by measuring the temperature of the top of the CPU at the geometric center. They measure it externally. At 72°C t-case, the cores inside are MUCH hotter - closer to 100°C.
