I've decided that I will be going the x99 route with an MSI mobo.

What 16gb 4x4 kit do you guys recommend?

Preferably, from amazon (prime)

Edit: I forgot to include that it would need to clear the Noctua NH-D15 cooler

The Noctua NH-D15 is going to block off your top PCI-E slot on X99 so if you want to avoid that you need to get the NH-D15S
And it has space for RAM up to 64mm so the only RAM you cant use are the super tall RAM like Kingston HyperX Predator.

Will it have the same issue if i get the Phanteks instead?

I read that the x99 has an issue with ram over 2666? Is this issue still exist?

Planning to get this kit
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM 3000 (PC4 24000) Intel X99 Platform Memory F4-3000C15Q-16GVR https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013J7I80O/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_T93RwbKZZ9ZTV

The Phanteks even worse as it will also block off the top PCI-E slot and its RAM clearance is even lower then the NH-D15.
And yes not all X99 CPU´s can work with RAM faster then 2666 MHz.

If one's using a single gpu, then can't he use the second pcie slot?

Yes he can but if he is going to add a second card later he cant do SLI or Crossfire without having the cards sit right next to each other and there by choking them.
There is no reason to do that when the NH-D15S has enough room to clear the top PCI-E slot.

In an effort to try my hand at memory overclocking I just OC'd my G.Skill Ripjaw 2800 to 3200 16-16-16-36 @ 1.35V, They make 3400 modules now...

I believe that the reason that there was a problem with anything over 2666MHz was due to motherboard support which has now been corrected.

Most DDR4 XMP profiles over 2666 MHz use 125 MHz CPU strap, which is no problem for X99 boards and CPUs with current BIOS installed.

My Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3000 came out of the box with an XMP profile that sets a 125 MHz strap and 24x multiplier.

I've read that 100 cpu strap is better for the 5820k?
