Large Downloads bringing entire Network Down?

Having a strange networking issue. I think the culprit is the PC, but it could be my modem or my provider (TWC).

I thought the issue was router, but I put back my older router and the issue persists. I have a mild memory of it happening on my second PC also, so I'm not 100% sure its the PC but I believe it is.

When I download large files (primarily games on steam) it actually over-runs my entire network and causes my internet to go down sometimes almost instantly, but almost always within 30 seconds.

I knew that the PC had some sort of spyware/malware/virus so I decided it was time to pull out the new HDD that was larger I had bought on sale and was too lazy to install as I wasn't in need of the space. I did that and I thought all was well, I had fresh windows and was able to download all the games in 1 shot NBD.

Fastfoward about 10 days, and I'm trying to download a game and the same issue happens. Within 30 seconds it shoots my internet until I stop the download and either give it 5-10 minutes and it'll come back to life on its own or restart the router.

On my TP-Link AC1900 router, it actually started flashing orange when the internet went down. On my ASUS, I don't see any light changes that I can see but the internet still goes down. Modem is Netgear CMS500.

Is it possible that whatever virus/etc I had on the PC ended up being a hardware based one and I'm now screwed? I'm not sure how to even start with the diagnostic of my issue.

I am tech savvy in the sense that I built all my PCs since I was 11, I've found the culprit for 95% of my issues myself and google, but I am not an expert enough to know where to begin on this one.

Are you on wired or wireless? Have you tried limiting the machine download speed to see what that does? In steam you can set a limit on the download speed. It seems odd that a download would kill the entire internet connection, however its very likely you are saturating the bandwidth resulting in everything timing out. I would set steam to 25 or 50% of what your max is and see what happens.

Wired.

I had already tried to set steam to 5mb/sec (I get 330mb down) and it still happened, and it happened when the connection only got to about 3mb/sec.

330mb down.. that's crazy who is your internet provider? Are you by chance reading kb/s as mb/s? Try lower.. take it down to 1mb and see what happens. You could also try something like this: http://seriousbit.com/netbalancer/

What is your network card? I have ran into strange issues in the past with killerNIC's... do you have another modem you can test with?

Of course its a Killer its the network card on mobo. "GAMER NETWORKING BRO"

My PC that is working fine is an intel card on the mobo.

I have TWC and have their 300mb package, when it actually works I would say I max at around 40mb/sec on steam. Its not the speed cause I can do speed test after speed test on that PC and it doesn't bog it. Everything I've read on the internet so far seems to be saying its your router/modem which doesn't make sense cause it works fine on this PC (at least 99% of the time) but consistently doesn't work on that PC.

Gonna try and download different drivers and see what happens for the network card. I don't think its any sort of speed issue like I said, cause sometimes we have multiple things streaming and I'm playing a game etc etc and its no issues. Its specifically when that computer tries to download something and more specifically on steam.

I had the same issue with a 210mbps connection, using an Asus AC68U. After a few minutes of downloading the router would just lock up and would have to be rebooted.

The only solution I found was to flash Tomato firmware to it. Something in the default firmware didn't like all that throughput. I think it had something to do with the number of "connections" or "threads" the data transfer was using. This only happened when downloading from the internet. Internal transfers were fine.

If your router is capable of flashing a different firmware, it may be worth a try.

I just dont think it can be the router specifically. For a few reasons.

1) It works fine on my other PC currently
2) This router used to work fine at 15mb/sec all day on my previous living location and this specific PC (downloading at 15mb, I had a 125mb connection)
3) It still happens when I limit the throughput to baby numbers.
4) It happened on both routers, both times only with one of the two PCs. (the same PC both times)

What O/S are you using? the O/S will tell you directly what it thinks it is downloading / uploading for your entire PC not just steam. And it will show the program doing it.

1. CNTL Alt Delete

2. Task Manager

3. Performance TAB

4. Open Resource Monitor

5. Network TAB

I always sort on "Total B/Sec" largest to smallest. This should be your first clue to what's going on and whether it's inside your PC or not as you can watch this while you kick off a download.

I see... is it possible for you to connect your PC directly to the modem and try it?
