Best CPU for FM2/FM2+ for my build? Internal Graphics not needed, just CPU performance!!!

post #1 of 17
Thread Starter
My current built:
AMD A8 6600k Black edition OCed 4.5 GHz on CM Hyper TX3 Evo
Gigabyte G1.Sniper a88x Gaming motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) 1600 MHz OCed to 2133 MHz (11-10-11-28)
No GPU yet!
So I am planning to upgrade it n May end may be! tongue.gif I am planning to buy MSI GTX 970 and a good water cooler like Corsair H100i. So I wanna know what will be the best CPU for this with that GTX 970. I just need CPU performance no need of APU, GTX 970 is there but if any APU is giving better CPU performance than any CPu, that also will be great! I am thinking to buy Anthlon 860k... What you guys think about it!
Thanks

With what is currently out right now, I would suggest the Athlon X4 860k. It is essentially the same chip as the A10-7850k (if I am remembering correctly) but with the iGPU disabled. You should be able to overclock it fairly easily to 4.5ghz as well. Overall, that is the best bet for you on the FM2+ platform.

The 860K is what you're looking for. It's a 7850K with the GPU disabled, and when overclocked, provides performance in the range between an i5-2320 and an i5-3570, depending on what the application is. For $70, you can't do better than that.

Once you get it, there are plenty of people here who can help. The 860K thread is at 2,455 posts and counting.

The problem with the 845 is that it's not a "K" part, and overclocking on FM2+ with just the reference clock doesn't get you very far. At 3.5 base/3.8 turbo, it's not likely to be faster than an 860K, and certainly can't be overclocked to 4.5 GHz like an 860K can.

If AMD wants to offer better performance for FM2+, we need to see the 870K and 880K finally turn up somewhere other than in the Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó.

True enough, but I am anxious to see the results from desktop Excavator.

860K or 870K are your best bet. They have higher IPC than Vishera.

870k and aim for 4600-4700 overclock.

How much performance will get with X4 870 vs X4 860 ? The only deference is the stock Frequency

Frequency (MHz) X4 860 --> 3700 and X4 870 --> 3900
Turbo Freq (MHz) X4 860 --> 4000 and X4 870 --> 4100
Both @ 95Watt TDP

So. if u OC both at (lets say) 4,5 ... they gonna get the exactly the same performance ... Right ? ( if yes why bother get the 870 ? )

I looked around for benchmarks , till now 0 results

Question ... maybe ? its better to get the A10-7860K with the 65Watt TDP , OC ant 4,5 and use the extra graphic power to help the GPU ? ... correct ?

Might see if a x4 845 is available soon also. Excavator had to be better than steamroller variants as long as we can OC them
