AMD Crimson Edition 16.1.1. HOTFIX - Beta - Page 6

What a wonderful driver. So much overhead.

Rise of the Tomb Raider CPU Scaling Test

AMD 290X CFX
4.5GHz 3930K
DDR3 2400MHz Quad.

Settings:

HT OFF CFX OFF
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
ONE CORE

TWO CORE

FOUR CORE

SIX CORE

HT OFF CFX ON
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
ONE CORE

TWO CORE

THREE CORE

FOUR CORE

SIX CORE

So the game does not seem to use more than 3 cores at most, two of which are being utilized by each 290X when CFX is enabled. The game uses 2 cores well, and a bit of the 3rd, despite task manager showing usage on all threads when 6 cores are enabled. HT did not improve things sadly. In comparison, TR 2013 used 4 cores extremely well.

Just so you are all aware, I retested with SSAA at x2. The FPS remained at 48. That's a sign of a CPU bottleneck. One things for sure, this game is seriously heavy on the CPU in this location.

So my min FPS is 48, with a 3930K. That's just pathetic!

Rise of the Tomb Raider Anisotropic Filtering Test

3930K 4.5GHz HT ON
2400MHZ DDR3
290X CFX RSC 16.1.1.
1.0v Build 610_1.64

Settings:

AF x16
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

AF x2
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Verdict: No visual loss that I can see, yet a 10 FPS boost! Much needed when running at 2560 x 1080 + SSAA x2. That's over 5 million pixels.

I'm the Auther of that guide.
Why are you telling me to use this? I've proven both overhead and AF are an issue with this game and driver. Many others have been able to reproduce my issues.

Oh, my bad. I always recommend that guide of yours. Try DDU, then. When you say many, it means not all can replicate the issue.

I saw your exchange with sugar where he is not having an issue with a game but you are. he tried to help you but . . .

Suger and I have done some testing as of late with ROTTR and have found the game to be hitting the CPU hard with certain settings in certain locations. Hopefully a possible DX12 patch will optimize the tested locations.

LOD and Shadow Distance hit a single core on the CPU. If I run the game at 1080p or 4K, the limitation remains. I know this because my FPS did not change from 48 in that location. Upping the resolution only hides a CPU limitation because the FPS is lower in general. In other words, no matter what I do, the maximum fps in that location (at the tested settings) is 48 fps unless the Dev's optimize the locations or I upgrade my CPU. Having to upgrade the CPU would be a little unfair because most of it isn't even being used by the game. biggrin.gif

Nvidia will do better in this location because both their driver and architecture is designed for limited API's. AMD's isn't, due to their GCN's deep and vastly complex pipeline which is heavily being starved.

LOD as in Level of Detail? If it is, it goes quite well wiith the word bias.

Any of you guys get tri-fire to work in ROTRR? with the 16.1.1 non hotfix, the game ran ok, but only used one video card. With the hotfix, the game will use 3 video cards, but it is unplayable as it has a huge white bloom that takes up the whole screen. With two cards it runs fine, but obviously if I could get 3 cards running that would be great.

Yeah that happens to me as well. I dropped down to two cards for now until it's fixed.
