[ZDNet] Microsoft starts pushing Windows 10 as a 'recommended' update - Page 7

After my parents battled to get GWX off their laptop with no success (damn thing kept coming back over and over again), I followed the instructions in that guide, and GWX has been a complete non-issue since. Best part is because you still have KB3035583 installed, Windows Update never bothers you again about this "recommended update".

Yes, I know about it but I don't use it because I started uninstalling those KBs / preventing them from installing very early on manually when sites started reporting on KB3035583 and before it became 'active' so it doesn't make sense to let those updates in now.

I won't go to the extreme of disabling Windows Update, but I have it set to "Check for updates, but let me chose whether to download and install them" and the "Recommended Updates" section checkbox is unchecked. Then I manually see what every update is about. If you rely on third party tools you're not guaranteed that they are updated to keep the most recent updates at bay in time. It ends up being a reactive measure and I'm doing things proactively.

As I said in my first post in this thread, the Windows 10 update is not showing for me most probably because I don't have those updates installed, namely KB2951664, which they did try to push again, re-publishing it yesterday (the last time I hid it was on the 12th of January).

So, my question was mainly to those that will go through the experience to report back on how Microsoft is playing this game.

7 and 10 now.

It's a shame if you're on an old machine with hardware that isn't getting any new updates from the vendor, nor MS's self made drivers. Let's be honest, most of those people aren't exactly using those "outdated" machines for anything serious and aren't in any need of a forced hardware upgrade. Sorry MS but if we wanted to be in a locked down dictatorship of an OS we would have had Macs. Not the case for a reason. And no, security and resources are not acceptable reasons for this path folks.

"Recommended update" always works with the big part of the users. They know how to play the game.

I was asking how they are playing the game if people say "No".

At least that's how I see it.

I mean crying over this is like expecting a car company NOT to recommend their new models over the old ones! rolleyes.gif

If Windows were a car, no-one in their right mind would buy it.
Licensing terms for operating systems have been "we reserve the right to change these terms without notice" for years, the problem is that before Windows 10 we had no indication that anything was going to change. Now all bets are off.
There is no way to prove that Microsoft isn't going to screw everyone over after the fact until enuogh time has passed to establish whether or not Windows 10 users are being screwed over.

Windows 10 is awesome. I don't understand why everyone is so scared to switch. Half the time the employees in my company don't even notice that I upgraded their computer to windows 10.

Scared is such a strong term that I feel doesn't accuratly describe how people feel about it. In these forums we're not 'scared' to update, we're trying to "vote with our wallets" by not buying into a product we don't like and sadly we're not like your employees .. we have some tech-sense biggrin.gif

My standpoint is that I didn't like 8 for the metrosexual UI, 8.1 was an improvement but I just didn't want the bloatware and felt it was too much work when my win7Ultimate was already set-up ( yeah, lazyness biggrin.gif ) for some reason they skipped win9 for some old tosh and released win10. .. we know how that release went and I won't touch win10, I'll be happy to either wait out Win11 or go Linux and all the DX12 confectionary goodness won't tempt me into that car-crash of anti-privacy landmines.

I do hope they sort their poop out but we all know with other practices like DLC, it only gets worse ..

lol scared of Win 10 nope not at all. Worst that can happen is I waste time re-imaging my drive, but my time is precious wink.gif

Tpi2007, come to this sad and surreal point, do you really think ANY update from Microborg can be trusted at all anymore? rolleyes.gif
