[OC3D] Seagate Hit with Class Action Lawsuit for High Failure Rates - Page 14

My only Seagate drive sometimes doesn't want to turn on all the way, it clicks but doesn't spin up. I do have it running through a janky external SATA to USB controller though.

Of all my WD drives, one did fail after a few years of use (this was like in 2004), but my 1 TB Black is trucking along fine since 2009. All the other WD drives I've had in my house all still work... Even my old 80 GB PATA drive, I still use for Windows installs.

In like 2001 I had a Maxtor drive fail...

not the typical desktop hdd..

They're usually just typical desktop drives put into external enclosures. Once you rip them back out of those enclosures, there isn't any difference.

Very very seldomly do they produce a new line of disk drives just for use as externals. It is much cheaper to just use existing product line and stick them in some plastic shells with a usb controller and a small power supply.

Seagate for me has a terrible track record for anything made in the last 3-4 years. I've got a 1TB Hybrid 2.5" drive that I've had replaced on warranty 4 times because the damn thing keeps dying.

Seems that I'v had the exact opposite experience with Seagate HDDs. All of them that I'v ever owned are still going with no signs of issues. I'v had my 4TB drive for about two years and I'm still very happy with it. Same with my older Samsung 500GB and 1TB spinpoint drives.

On the other hand, I'v had several DOA Western Digital drives and I decided to quit buying from them. Replaced a few dead WD drives on laptops as well but no Seagate, Hitachi, or Samsung. I only have one functional WD drive left that I installed in a Xbox 360, and I don't dare use it for anything more than that.

Anyway, hopefully people with issues on Seagate drives can get some sort of refund or replacement options out of this.

http://www.storagereview.com/western_digital_and_seagate_cut_hard_drive_warranty_lengths

Seagate has since increased the warranty to two years. I miss the days when Seagate Barracudas were still made in Singapore and came with 5-year warranties. Those drives lasted me almost a decade and were still working when I sold them off.

Funny you should say that. My dad worked for em in singapore for almost 15 years and was laid off during the cost cutting processes ie, factory closed down. Never had a seagate hdd though so i cant pass comments on it, rocking WD and they are pretty good.

Er, I know the next HDD I'm buying.

Hitachi.

idk, i kind of like the backblaze data for a couple reasons.
1- its a faster way to get fail data on a drive/model line.....basically a reliability benchmark, nothing we all havent done with our PCs before.
2- in a real world HOME USER server environment you are most likely not going to have super stabilized trays with dampening, etc....you are either using some old gateway case you hobbled together to hold 5+ drives or you are using the cheapest thing you could get with 10 bays...every home server i have came across in my experience, this has been the case...even my personal one isnt some crazy thing, i just use my main right with 5 drives as a server and back up when needed to another device....when i need more space i rebuild with larger drives. sometimes my case sounds like a freakin earthquake machine...i say this because in my opinion and from my experience only, which isnt being stated as fact, i would assume that a home user "server" enviroment would be closer to a hellish backblaze world than it would be to a super engineered google datacenter.
