[OC3D] Seagate Hit with Class Action Lawsuit for High Failure Rates - Page 9

lol, Backblaze.

Had a firmware error'd 1tb drive I recycled before moving last yr. Kinda wish I still had it. I've also seen more failed seagates in oem machines, especially after the shortage in new PCs. Mixed bag now, but I see less HDD failures in this less dusty environment.

but don't let that stop the hate-wagon.

At the time, when I bought the drive, Seagate only offered a one year warranty which I verified on the Seagate website. The short warranty period must have something to do with that particular batch/lot post-Thailand flooding, made in China drives.

http://www.storagereview.com/western_digital_and_seagate_cut_hard_drive_warranty_lengths

Seagate has since increased the warranty to two years. I miss the days when Seagate Barracudas were still made in Singapore and came with 5-year warranties. Those drives lasted me almost a decade and were still working when I sold them off.

Other than that, all of my other drives are rock solid. Seagate or not Seagate.

2c2. More importantly, TT is flat out wrong about the conditions being worse - modern HDDs lift their heads when vibration limits are exceeded and actually perform better and last longer in "hotter" conditions (~45*C) than in cooler conditions. Sure, BB's storage pods are definitely not representative of a typical home user with 2 or 3 HDDs, but the disks are (mostly) designed to take these circumstances into account ("mostly" because some drives have really bad parking for 24/7 use).

Can't speak to the rest of your concerns but Hardware.fr's (the french distributor) numbers don't match Backblaze's data at all.

http://www.hardware.fr/articles/944-6/disques-durs.html

None of the Seagate drives experience greater than 2% failure rate and none as the worse in their capacity category.

Also Backblaze's data isn't that bad for Seagate's now and does better than WD. I blame the 1.5tb and 2tb Seagate Green drives which were notoriously bad

You need to go back to school and bone up on percentages.
