upgrading from xfire 6970; gtx 970 vs r9 380x?

Good day guys!

Need a bit of help. Been playing fallout 4 and newer titles and I'm starting to feel the oldness of my cards. I have 2 options that I've checked out. Palit gtx 970 jetstream and powercolor R9 380x myst edition. Which would be better overall? In Japan I can get either card at roughly the same price (sucks I know). Which would be better in the long run? Thanks in advance guys!

PS. Playing on 2560x1440 monitor. Thanks!

Two 280x / 380x are somewhere in between a 980 - 980 TI, or pretty much bang on a 980, depending on the game, performance wise.

OC a 970 and you've basically got a 980 performance wise. All while using a fair bit less power too.

Answer of which card to get seems pretty straight forward to me.

From what I read the performance for 1440 gaming is pretty much going toward the gtx 970. And besides what I figure is any of the two is an upgrade from my current xfired 6970's. Would it be worth jumping to r9 390? Or would the 970 still be better overall?

Get a used 290x, it is a bit better than 970.Or get a 390/x. 380x is not supposed to be the 970 counter part, although it does it in lots of games now.

I live in Japan and we kinda get screwed over in pricing regarding these cards. Even in the second hand market its still a bit high. I could probably push for the r9 390. Would that be better overall?

Well, a 390 is practically a 290 with just more VRAM and higher stock clocks. If you can afford 2nd hand 290/x, buy it instead of new one, the price should be substantially lower than a new one.
