[sa] News of Nvidia’s Pascal tapeout and silicon is important - Page 8

Well if all this hub bub about Pascal really getting taped out in Nov/ Dec, and AMD had Polaris chips running in December, then AMD *should* have a few months lead on Nvidia. I would except a paper launch from Nvidia when AMD delivers actual hardware.

If Nvidia somehow hard launches Pascal before Polaris, then that could possibly be an indication that they're confident the it would be competitive, on the other hand, a delay would most likely be because Pascal would be slower.

I'm going to wait and see.

Just no.

So you post their overclocking of 980Ti lightning to dispute my saying that 980Ti lightning at stock had a max. boost clock of 1493Mhz? Just no.

The Lightning numbers would be a pretty safe average for a 980 Ti. I don't think I've ever seen one that could not hit 1400 Mhz. So you can pretty much add 25% to 980 Ti fps from any source.

It's quite realistic since maxwell is starved for bandwidth at higher clocks, see AT's 980 review for example with results with and without memory OC.

Lightning is 93Mhz over 1400Mhz and is beyond the reach for the other five 980Ti samples tested at their max OCs. So not exactly a safe average.

Yea, I though it was impressive that AMD had working silicon in Jan, but apparently they had already demoed the same demo in early December. Pcper's Ryan Shrout confirmed it as well in his CES review. Looks like Apple is getting them chips quickly.

The techpowerup Lightning sample is not running at 1493 Mhz out of the box. Show me specifically in that review where 1493 MHz out of the box is stated by the author and I happily concede your point.

Normal gpu boost will NOT put another 190 Mhz onto the base boost clock for any card not even a Lightning.

Techpowerup added 87 Mhz to the base clock of the Lightning to get it to 1518 Mhz overclock.

Bit-tech, Guru3d, ReviewStudio and Kitguru among others also reviewed the Lightning card and they were all in the high 1300 to low 1400 for out of the box boost block.

And yes, 1400 mhz is indeed a safe average overclock for a 980 Ti. Most can easily get another 75-100 Mhz sometimes more.

That's a realistic figure. 1291 MHz spec, boosts to 1405 MHz depending on voltage bins. 1304 Mhz boosting to 1493 MHz isn't.

I've had 3 980 and a 980 Ti. My everyday OC on the 980 Ti is 1451 Mhz no extra voltage needed.

Ugh I really hope the price of Pascal Titan isn't 1300+ USA at launch. I want 2 and the conversion rate to canadian is brutal right now, lol.

If AMD could release steady and stable Xfire drivers I would have absolutely no problem with an AMD solution. I have used 3-4 different Xfire configurations in the past ( as recently as the 200 series) and consistently had more problems with their drivers in comparison to SLI.

HDMI 2.0 would also need to be included in their hardware.

Polaris will have hdmi 2 and dp 3. Finally. I do think whoever comes out of the gate first will sell a lot of cards. The 980ti launched 8 months ago. People are feeling that itch.
