New SSD- Years removed from Linux Set-ups.

Thread Starter
I have a machine I built last year with W8.1 on one of the SSD's already installed. I am getting another SSD and want to use Linux on it as a boot-drive and browse the web on that drive. Please help refresh my memory into how to do this. I do not have a DVD/CD drive. I will be doing this via flash-drive. Any and all help is appreciated. Also a point in the right direction to a good Linux OS would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks Guys/Gals

  1. Download your distro
  2. Mount the iso to your USB
  3. Remove all other drives, apart from the SSD you're installing it on (optional but I always do it)
  4. Boot to USB, and follow on screen instructions

I usually use pendrivelinux. Do what's said above but after that you will need to update the bootloader. Mint is a good OS.

1a - Always run md5 checksum on the iso to rule out any corruption of data. It may be less than required on say a movie which would likely only suffer a few glitches but on an Operating System any corruption is capable of disaster.
