[Anandtech] AMD Launches Excavator on Desktop: The 65W Athlon X4 845 for $70 - Page 4

Anyone knows how overclocking works on these non K parts ?

I suppose you overclock these with baseclock, but how does that effect the rest of the system (ie is baseclock on apus/athlons tied to everything like on intel) ?

Bus speed.
Athlon x4 740 ... I havent tried to OC, but on air you can get 10% @ 3,9-4.0GHz boost.

Again excavator is not great overclocker, unless...

Not with Wraith CPU cooler. thumb.gif

So, has this got SMT? Because on the mentioned link it says it has two cores but 4 threads.

But we have to know that excavator wont get to 4.5GHz.

skylake i3s (specially the 6300 parts) will perform better than excavator because of ST advantage of skylake.
not to mention with i3-6100's 3.7Ghz base clock, an OC of 4.5Ghz is about ~22% higher, which isn't enough to out-right outperform the i3.
while on the other hand, this is excluding the x8 less PCIe lanes this excavator processor has.

other than that, excavator X4 at $70 is still a good buy, its actually one of the best priced processors to date.
this is probably meant to sit between G3258 and i3-6100, if only they hadn't slashed the PCIe lanes.

The site is stupid, it is not 2 cores/4 threads, its 2 modules/4 cores.

PCIe 3.0 @ 8x is literally the same as PCIe 2.0 @ 16x. So unless you plan on buying a $70 processor and doing some pointless SLi/Xfire setup, you'd never run into a GPU bottleneck (at least in terms of transmission rates between the PCIe slot and the GPU itself.) Not a big deal whatsoever.

Not SMT, but CMT (clustered multi-threading.) One module houses two individual integer execution units which share a few resources (but not all.) So one module gives you two cores/threads.

Also @everyone else: The reason this chip has no graphics is because the FM2+ socket can't power them properly. Every AMD APU after Kaveri has a different power lane setup; one for the CPU vcore, one for the Northbridge, and another for the graphics core. FM2+ socket can't power this last one so the only sensible thing to do is to disable the GPU and sell it as a CPU part.

It also comes with the new Wraith cooler so that's interesting.

AMD recently did a weird respin or something with Bristol -- it's gonna have 4MB of L2$ again and maybe some other improvements to uarch as well. Also it will NOT support DDR3 in spite of the existence of the DDR3 controller on the floorplan, AM4 socket is DDR4 only.

It's more cost-effective for AMD to have just the existing AM3+ and FM2+ lines, since FX and Opteron are identical silicon. The existence of bum APU's with functional CPU sections is just a lucky accident that we get to take advantage of.

How would opterons fare without L3?

Carrizo only has x8 PCI-E links (+ x4 used for UMI of course).

BCLK overclocking only. On APUs everything is tied to this frequency. At ~ 105MHz you will lose AHCI, FCH DACs at ~115MHz and PCI-E devices at frequencies depending on the device itself.
