[Anandtech] AMD Launches Excavator on Desktop: The 65W Athlon X4 845 for $70 - Page 5

According to AMD Excavator is around 40% more efficient than Steamroller cores, with more IPC.

One thing that was made perfectly clear in AMD’s briefing on the new Athlon was that this is not a performance part – due to the nature of Excavator the new CPU would be purely an efficiency play, allowing customers to take advantage of the latest architecture in the desktop if they didn’t need the full-fat performance.

Price says it all. At 70$, It won't certainly not beat the 10$ more expensive Athlon X4 860K.
This chip is a way to play on the Carrizo, Streamroller brands and to recycle chips that don't make the deal on mobile parts like Petykemano said.

But if you look a gaming review between the X4 860K and the G3258, I don't think there's lot to hope about the X4 845 :

http://www.techspot.com/review/1017-best-budget-gaming-cpu/

We'll see with the incoming reviews (it's weird to laucnch a CPU with no review at all) which was really rare on the Kaveri side.

not to mention with i3-6100's 3.7Ghz base clock, an OC of 4.5Ghz is about ~22% higher, which isn't enough to out-right outperform the i3.
while on the other hand, this is excluding the x8 less PCIe lanes this excavator processor has.

other than that, excavator X4 at $70 is still a good buy, its actually one of the best priced processors to date.
this is probably meant to sit between G3258 and i3-6100, if only they hadn't slashed the PCIe lanes.

SMT is not scaling well in DX12 titles.

I3 5.0GHz will never ever match i5 3.0Ghz. I can tell you that. Just like in BF4 also in AotS. SMT- hyperthreading doesnt scale well.

I dont know which instructiuons BF4 use and I know that AitS is using SSE.

Here you have test with R9 NANO
Average CPU performance -
7870K vs i5 4690K
- i5 scores 87.2 FPS
- 7870K scores 46.7 FPS
Almost double performance.

why compare an i3 to an i5? AMD's X4 isn't even a full pipeline.

My experiences with hyperthreading and DX12 is that hyper threading add minimal boost, but it give much more stability.

While i agree that zen deserves all focus, the curious thing is for me is why did they even bother with new godavari apus this year, when Bristol Ridge is only a few months away, and updating fm2+ and am3+ motherboards? Especially the latter one without any new cpu into it.

Does not matter. HT will easly account for 1GHz different and 2 cores @ 5GHz will be so much better 90% of the games out there. Just try DX12? Are you from the future?

Im looking forward, Excavator seems the strongest AMD CPU for SUperpi benchmarks smile.gif Time for LN2 and AMD WR in this old test.

Probably not as well. Any L3 cache, even a dog-slow one like in the K15h FX and Optys, will improve performance on server workloads. L3 cache was used in a lot of server CPU's long before it ever showed up in consumer chips. Intel was using L3 in Netburst Xeons 15 years ago, and it had appeared in non-x86 server chips long before that.

AMD never would have made Optys without L3 cache. They wouldn't have been any good. And it was cheaper to just make everything based on the Opteron design than to have a separate mask and production run for consumer chips without the L3.

No consumer chip used L3 until the AMD K6-III came out in 1999, and its L3 was motherboard-based. After that, it didn't appear again until the x86-64 multi-core era.
