This isn't in any of the slides that they released yesterday, but during the conference call I asked about forthcoming AM1 products, and there's a 2.6GHz Athlon 5350 successor coming out sometime this year.

AMD has to juggle TDP and power use in Jaguar much more than they do for desktop APUs because it doesn't make use of resonant clock mesh technology, IIRC. That's why you don't see a 3.0GHz quad-core Jaguar, because it just wouldn't be power-efficient and the extra power might come at the expense of very small performance gains.
All true. You can't just ramp up the clock speeds on any design at will. It doesn't work that way. If it did, AMD would be selling 4.5 GHz Phenom III processors right now on 28nm with the AVX instructions added on.

The cat cores are a low-power design. People have overclocked them to the 3 GHz range, but not always reliably, and they're not so low-power when you do. AMD would have to rework the design to achieve high clockspeeds. If it were that simple, Intel would have had the first Core desktop parts three years sooner than they did. It took them that long from the time Banias showed up to rework it into a high-performance desktop part.

I honestly think if they just add the newest instructions to the phenom II, and have up to an 8 core, it will be a real winner right there. and im talking about REAL 8 cores, not the module garbage amd is doing now. Fun fact, the phenom x6 was the last time amd released a true 6 core in the desktop market.

IPC is still higher just scaling is down.
- Jaguar 3.1mm^2 on 28nm. They could scale up this core... probably they would need to improve L2 cache etc., but it would rock.

Biggest problem is that phenom was already small core and it wasnt focusing FPU performance, but it wasnt bad core at all. I dont know why people promoting phenom so bad, but it was already step in wrong direction.

Look at few games that are single threaded like WoT.

@epic

I was talking about per-core performance/IPC, not the clock differences. Jaguar is primarily a low-power design and wasn't meant to scale to higher clocks. See: console APU's for an example.

although IPC is almost comparable, just about 10% less.
if that was the case, we would've seen a bit of a beefed up AM1 that out-performed piledriver by now.
a 3Ghz puma core with an IPC of steamroller, 4 true cores, and a TDP of <40W.

Not drinking anything. Clock for clock same IPC if not a smudge more in somethings and smudge less in others. If you can overclock the AM1 to the same frequency you can definitely get the same performance results.

None of the Athlon X4 8xx CPUs are sold in India.AMD would sell tons of these and people would buy these over the Pentiums and i3 but very strange decision by AMD not to sell these CPU's.

Athlon x4 750K/860K is pretty good against Pentium g3258 in well threaded games.

same here, i've yet to actually see an FM2 athlon X4 here.

Excavator at 3.8GHz might match or even beat 4.4GHz steamroller.
probably Athlon x4 845 with fast 2133/2400Mhz dual channel DDR3 will best budget CPU.
we'll see
