Ive been considering an R9 390 or a gtx970, ive always run intel rigs with nvidia cards , almost exclusively 70's in sli.. Now im tempted by the 8 Gb of a 390 and may make the jump to amd. What do you think ?

The 390 is a fine choice.
The price fluctuates some what, but you can find some models for under $300 most of the time.
I prefer the Powercolor or Sapphire Nitro versions.

I glossed over your location, sorry.

No, there are no compatibility issues.

Ya im not as cheap as i seem , im really looking at the msi r9 390. It will have a full cover waterblock soon and until then it has direct cooling on vrams which is nice. The card also comes with a decent pre programmed OC. It will cost about 525 $ shipped which is 373 usd.

Hello Simon,

I too am from this Great White North and did grab that cheapest r9 390 from amazon.ca. It is an XFX and AMD completely happy with it. Take note that if you are going full body water block stick with the MSI as it seems to be the only 'no reference' 200 aka 300 series that will with the EKWB.com blocks. I have the so called newer non reference so will not be able to go that route but did do the NZXT mounting kit for a CPU water block and some modified add-on heat sinks not for the vram but vrms.
My most stable oc at this time is 1180 core with 1675 ram and no volt changes.

water cooled:
idle
core 30c vrm #1 32c vrm # 2 33c

overclocked and gaming
core 39 c vrm #1 42c vrm #2 50c

and all fans on low.

Not too shabby I'd say~

Not too shabby indeed man , I bought the MSi off newegg for 515 shipped tax in, nice card cool backplate and was rated high overclocker on stock air because the heatpipes actually contact the vrms directly . I may decide to water cool it down the road and that did factor in when choosing the card but I was also limited in length and the MSI is shorter than most.

Im running stock air coolers with a modified fan curve ( they push the quiet bs and leave the fans off until 60 C ? )
1200 Core
1700 Memory
+100mV
+50% power limit
Benchmarking
Idle 30C
During test 59 C
Gaming OCd
41C max

For some reason I cannot get VRM temps using GPUz or HWinfo ,aparently not all cards will show since some have it run off the chip and others dont? Ill have to get a heat gun one day
