Should I get an i5 or an i7?

So, I'm upgrading my system to be compatible with the Oculus Rift and need some advice on what processor to get. I know that the Oculus is pretty hardware intensive so I figured I should get the i7 2600k. Would I be able to get away with an i5 6600k? Also, is the 1151 socket future proof? Probably a dumb question but I feel like I haven't seen much in the 1151 socket. Maybe that's just me though.

Anyway, thanks for the help! biggrin.gif

The i5 is actually probably better.

The big thing you want is maximum frame rates. Its better to get a faster i5 than a slower i7.

Ah I see.

Well I just had a look at your specs. You might be better off with trying to save up for a second gpu. Nvidia has VR SLI which will use 1 Gpu per screen per eye.

your system will probably be bottle necked a little bit, but so what. You would still be getting a lot more horse power adding a second gpu than by upgrading the cpu.

The issue I have though is that I used the compatibility tool for the Oculus and it said that I need a newer processor, which unfortunately means a new board as well (needed one anyway)

Honestly, the price premium for the 6700k is not worth it right now. You pay way way more than the Intel suggested price. Go with the i5 for now, wait for the refresh of z170 to get a i7 if it's even worth it by then. Z170 is a good platform it is on the bleeding edge of tech right now (DDR4, NVME, ect). If you need anymore than an i5 you should really go x99.

Would you have any suggestions for a board? My budget is right around $135

This looks ok, it's within your budget. I like Asus bios, I do not like gigabyte bios.
