Just in case it helps anyone make an SSD decision

I work as an IT Ops Engineer for a large insurance agency. We have some custom built quoting software that currently relies on a local SQL db (tool has an offline requirement).

We began transitioning to SSDs in about 2010/11. I can't recall a lot of specific models but i'm talking original OCZ Vertex drives, SandForce and Sandisk comes to mind as well.

Since that time roughly 6 years ago, I have purchased nearly 500 SSDs. Below are the approximate failure rates since my records right around early 2012. I have tried to get these numbers as close as possible but can't guarantee them to be exact.

OCZ Vertex Drives - we had about 40 in circulation and replaced them after an average of 1 1/2 years. 6 died.

OCZ Agility - we had one in circulation and it failed after 8 months of use.

OCZ Vector - We had about 20 in circulation. Most purchased in 2013. 1/4 of these died hard and at nearly the exact same time, while the other 15 were quickly proactively replaced.

Crucial CT256M4SSD2 256GB M4 ( $400 for 256GB, Aug 2011) This drive began to have issues about 12 months after purchase but still worked. It was cloned and retired.

SanDisk Ultra Plus - We had about 5 of these. I have records of 1 of the 5 failing and no idea what happened to the other 4.

Samsung 840 120GB MZ-7TD120BW (May, 2013 $100) - We started off with about 20 of these, quickly adding more until we had about 100 in circulation. We have had two 840 failures.

Samsung 840 Evo - (500GB $370, Sep 2013) - We got up to roughly 100 of these in circulation and have no records of any failures.

Samsung 850 Pro - (First record is Aug 2014, 256GB for $199) - Looks like we got up to about 100 in circulation. I have no records of any failures.

Samsung 850 Evo - (not sure when, 2014) Roughly 100 in circulation. I have record of 1 failure.

Samsung 950 - 512GB - (Dec 2015) - we have 6 in circulation, with no failures yet.

I understand the obvious issue with all this, as time went on SSDs in general became more reliable. WIth that said my main point remains that out of roughly 400 Samsung SSDs, we have had 3 fail.

Does this take the 840 (EVO) write slowdown and the 850 EVO file disappearing bugs into account?

I had basically the same experience with older OCZ drives and had to swear off them no matter how good the deal looked. I heard things improved by the 3rd generation but I had already been burned too many times to risk it.

Thank you!
So I knew it all the time. Samsung SSDs ftw.
Do you know whats the plan for new drives in your company? Pro or Evo? For now it looks like Evos are doing almost as well as Pro drives in your case. Time will tell.

OCZ seems alot better now. (atleast for consumer)
Picked up one of the new OCZ Trion 100 ssds on black friday for my father and it works well so far. But Im not sure how good it is for more advanced stuff other than office work.
