Stuttering although high FPS and low frame time on good hardware

Hi,

My hardware:
i74790k
Gigabyte GTX 970
MSI z97s krait edition
12GB DDR3 @1600MHz CL9
WD Blue EZEX HDD

From some time I'm getting stuttering on most games, even though both FPS count is high and frame time is low as measured by afterburner.
It's not freezing. It's just like my framerate would be about 20-30 mostly even though it's 60+.

I have those issues even with less demanding games like CoD MW2 and CoD 4 where they should be buttery smooth. Everything is fine with source engine games.

Running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit with 361.43 nvidia drivers.

Since Need for Speed Most Wanted is now free I decided to play it. Guess what.

I even changed from adaptive to performance in nvidia settings, but it doesn't matter.

GPU 1 is GTX 970
GPU 2 is iGPU

I'm running bios from here for a long time now. http://www.overclock.net/t/1544574/gigabyte-gtx-9xx-g1-gaming-h2o-air-bios-tweaking/1080#post_24130779

Got any other applications that use DirectX/graphics acceleration open in sight? That can mess with the proper displaying of the frames, at least with AMD cards.

Another option: changing primary monitor, to a monitor with different refresh rate, severely messes with displaying of games on AMD, unless rebooting or finding another workaround.

Another option: Something like the above. Might be anything related to monitor, or something.

If framerate and frametime are perfectly good, it's probably some software issue like that.

2T at the moment.

I don't think so, nothing else than afterburner and RTSS for that overlay you see in the screenshot.

I only have one monitor thats 60HZ.

Framerate and frametime are not good in some games like CoD or Most Wanted. In CoD FPS and frametime looks perfectly good while it's stuttering. In Most Wanted frametime and FPS is bad and it's displayed properly as seen in the screenshot. :/

In my experience 1T is smoother.

In your first situation it sounds like you are noticing the monitor refresh rate. 60Hz is very noticeable for me. Back in early 2000 I was using 140Hz or 160Hz on my CRT and it was very smooth and the input lag was noticeably shorter when I upped the refresh rate.

Thanks man! It seems that this has helped a bit. I've generally enabled XMP profile for all of my sticks even though one pair isn't XMP and it's just 1333MHz CL9, but it works well with XMP profile of the other 2 sticks that are 1600MHz CL9. I also manually changed from 2T to 1T as you advised and I have to admit that I'm really impressed!

Currently my ram setup is as follows:
wait... what? It's a bit different from what I've set in UEFI and what I just said.

Anyway Most Wanted is now running perfectly fine on 60FPS stable with all maxed, but supersampling OFF with GPU Usage about 50% max.
When I enable supersampling it goes back to performing exactly like it performed before....

One of it is Supersampling 2X and another 4X

I think above is 4X

and this one is supersampling 2X.

Well, at least I can play now, but I'm puzzled as to why there is so much difference when I changed the timings. I did expect a difference, but marginally different.

What should I do next to fully utilize my GTX 970?

Might want to get a 144Hz monitor with 1ms refresh rate

I'm not talking about input lag or too low screen refresh rate here man. I'm talking about a game not running with 60FPS. I can tell that after I changed my ram latencies CoD games also run like they should, but the performance of 970 is somewhat crippled. It should run Most Wanted maxed out on 1080p with stable full 60 FPS, but after I enable supersampling on 2x or 4x the performance is crippled.

I've heard that if the GPU memory usage goes beyond 3.5Gb on the GTX 970 that it slows down the performance because of that crippled half a gigabyte of memory that is different. I usually don't play in full resolution mode but in 16x9 on my 1080p monitor, and I use EVGA Precision to monitor the gpu and memory clocks as well as the GPU memory usage, in the system tray (lower right hand corner)

EDIT: There have been articles about it on some of the major tech sites.

Yeah, I have seen that, but the performance difference isn't that big actually when it's down to numbers. Anyway, you can see on the screenshots that it's not even using 2gb of the vram (MEM1 section). It goes to ~1500MB of VRAM in Supersampling X4 and ~1200MB of VRAM in Supersampling X2 so it's not even close to 3500MB of Vram frown.gif
