Building a new system, advice needed - Page 5

Reviving this topic, I can't decide between the GIGABYTE Z170X-UD5 or the ASUS MAXIMUS VIII RANGER. Opinions?

Also, I won't be buying a 480, I'd have to crossfire two of them and some applications (most notably Adobe Creative Suite) don't really scale well over crossfire. Still unsure whether I'll buy a 1070 or a 1080, but I know that it's going to be an ASUS card - second question here, is it worth the additional money to buy an Advanced or OC version of the card?

That's a good question, because you have no idea how much OC headroom the card will have (if bought new). With the factory OC, you know that it's guaranteed for what it's listed. With a non-OC card, may not get much higher than standard clocks. Sometimes, the factory OC cards are only $10 more, or less if you find a good deal, so I usually opt for them.

With both the 1070 and the 1080, the OC version means +65$ (at least where I live). I'll probably opt for a 1070 OC instead of a 1080 non-OC then, at least I'll have some money left for other stuff smile.gif

But I'm still unsure about the motherboards...

But I'm still unsure about the motherboards...

In that case, the decision will be tougher. I wasn't thinking and went by U.S. pricing.

Unfortunately, I can't offer any insight on the motherboards, as I haven't upgraded mine in several years. FWIW, I can say that my Asus board has held up well since early 2012. Good luck with your build!

I'd go with the Gigabyte one as I'm using GA-990XA-UD3 right now and I was able to get my FX-6300 to 5.45GHz at 1.712V on it. But from reviews I see many people getting DOA boards, or boards failing within months of purchase. I don'T know whether it's a build issue or just bad QC, but I don't want my board dying right after warranty ends. The one I have has held on for 4 years now.

Reason to go with asus would be that I'll most probably be getting an asus card and that I've not seen much negative feedback on the board. But I haven't seen any feedback regarding OC on it, all the OC is happening on the HERO board, not the RANGER. And I'm planning to OC quite a lot.

To clarify, I used the 990FX as an example of a good quality Gigabyte board. But I'll be going with Z170.
Also, you should have read the posts, not just glanced at them tongue.gif
Anyways, the question is: GA Z170X-UD5 or ASUS MAXIMUS VIII RANGER for overclocking an i7 6700K (with a Swiftech CLC)?
