He could for sure by a 4K G-Sync monitor but he'll be stuck with a pair of 970's to drive his games. I had a set of them about 6 months ago. They did a decent job at 1440p. I stress, decent. At 4K they won't achieve 60fps in the most demanding games.

To be clear, I mean if one is serious they might consider the 4K G-Sync monitor in addition to 980 Ti SLI. In that way they get the best they can get today (within a few inches) and can carry the G-Sync monitor forward after they dump their 980 Ti on the open market and upgrade to Pascal or Pascal+ or whatever.

I never disagreed that 60 fps was the target, I simply pointed out the concept of the GPU struggling is what made me laugh. It's semantic humor to me. The value of one technology for the first person may not be the same value to the next; it all comes down to what the user is targeting.
