AMD 7970 Crimson Issues (scrambled screen + fans stopped)

Thread Starter
Like I've seen out there, this driver is somehow affecting the fans and mine STOPPED. Yes, THEY STOPPED! My system crashed twice and the Log shows that the card hit 95ºC. Luckilly it didn't fry (much). As a solution (a desperate one, as I'm not willing to see if it happens again or with another driver) I cut the wires and hooked them to my motherboard fan header. Not a great solution, I know, but problem "solved".

For the second issue I've been having:

This happens ONLY when I try to watch a video on web browsers (not everytime though) and opening 3DMARK results files. If I remember correctly, 3D Mark was having issues with some Radeons, because they changed to a 2D video mode or something like that, which prevented the clock speeds from raising to my overclock speeds. I'm just running 3D Mark thru cmd since then, but can't see the results, lol. But with the results files (and sometimes videos), I get this scrambled screen crap, ONLY on my main monitor, which is hooked to my 7970 thru a hdmi cable. My second monitor, an old VGA 17'' AOC, in which I'm using a DVI-VGA adapter, keeps working perfectly fine when this happens. I can even game on it, while the other one is scrambled.

So, that being said, I can't help but relating this to some "mode change" that the GPU does when watching videos that is not going well.

So I wanna know if you guys have any thoughts about that. I know I know, I should rollback to the 15.7.whatever driver, and I will. I looked it up in the forums, but couldn't find anything related to that.

I will update this post when I rollback the drivers if anything comes up.

System in my signature. Thanks

Cheers!!

EDIT: Oh yeah, If I press the turn off button, the problem goes away and I get the shutdown screen normally ¬¬.

Warning: I am not a GPU expert by any means.

1) I have a 260X (7970 in reality), but haven't used Crimson drivers (i am not using the card right now). However, in case you are interested, the Arctic Accelero L1 is compatible and works wonders with it (also you should double check).

2) I don't think that such artifacts can be attributed to drivers only. I think your card is semi-fried. I have a similar case with a HD6450, that came like this. It boots fine to windows, it behaves normally in 3D, but, at some random point when on the desktop, it shows pink chessboard pattern on screen. And it's not driver problem. Your case, i would suspect is similar and means your card has something fried in the 2D and in the video acceleration (which is why you get problem with videos).

I could be wrong and you will soon find out. Catalyst 15.7.1 is very good driver for my 260X. Try that.

Hey, Undervolter

thanks for the reply, man!

In fact the 260x is not a 7970, the 280x is. The equivalent 7000 series to your card is the HD 7790. And my 7970 is already with a aftermarket cooler, a Gelid Icy Vision-A, which is pretty good for the price. It keeps my card at 60° under load @ 1125/1500.

Anyways, I get your point about frying some of the chip, but actually this scrambling issue happened before the semi-frying of the chip, so though it would make sense, it can't be related to one another. Besides, it doesn't happen randomly. There are specific cases in which I get this screen. So yeah, lets wait and see.

I just found out a friend of mine, who has a 290x, is having the same ****.

I installed the 15.7.1 and I'm waiting for anything to happen or not happen lol

Cheers!

This looks like an issue I had during the intro screens when loading GTR2.Once past the intro movies and to the main menu the picture would return to normal.Since your issue, like mine, only occurs under a specific circumstance makes me think the solution is the same as well.At first I thought it was caused by using DSR or an issue with W10.I fixed this issue by removing and reseating my GPU.If it doesn't work the first time then try it 2 or 3 times. You just might get lucky as I did.

P.S.
I found the solution accidently because I had to remove the GPU to be able to push the overclock genie button on my MB.I did it just to see what it would do for performance after some new parts. After reinstalling the GPU and starting GTR2 as a benchmark I was surprised to see the picture remained perfect the whole time.

Thanks man, gonna try that too. Since I posted this topic, i haven't had the issue again. It doesn't happen THAT frequently, though...

So, before rolling back the drivers I'm trying to use my second monitor on my 9800GT instead of using it on my 7970, to see if it affects the issue somehow. One thing I noticed is that my 7970 now idles at 300/150 instead of 500/1500. Let's see how it goes...

I´m currently using Crimson 16.1 drivers with zero problems on a G.A R9 280X O.C.

The fan issue was with the first version of Crimson. Something back to version 15.x....

Good Luck !

So, updating... I installed that new 16.1.1 Crimson driver and been using my 9800GT for my second monitor. Haven't had a issue since then.

Thanks for the replies!
