Thread Starter

Over the past few months I've experimented with running my server as a router and it works quite well in Linux (Mint) but Samba is quite slow so I would like to use Windows Server but I don't know which one would be better to use as router/media server.

I used 2003 about a decade ago but updates have been discontinued and it's antiquited anyway. I have access through my employer to 2008 and 2012. I have used 2012 but found it complicated however I am willing to give it another go if necessary.

The reason for this is that my switch is very slow, sometimes it copies at 10MBps, sometimes 50, which is ridiculously slow for a Gigabit switch. While it only cost 15 USD or 10 Euro's I would like something that works better and as I don't turn the server off. It has two Intel Gigabit NIC cards I bought especially for this purpose.

This might be a silly question but as the server is only going to be a simple media server and router I am not sure which version of Windows Server is the easiest to use or would suit my purposes best. Also I will probably need help setting the server up from you guys.

Thanks a lot everyone.

The girlfriend.
