I got a 4790k in my gaming rig and used the 4670k I already had to create my server. I planned to not oc but already had a K cpu. Since the mobo ended up supporting it I set it to a mild 4.2.

I can't actually believe that anyone supports Intel in this...It's blatant extortion of users to spend more on the same part and there can't be much that's legal in how they've worked this out with ASRock.

Especially when you consider the whole AMD anti-competitiveness thing...

Don't like it, buy whatever AMD has to offer, all their Desktop CPU's are overclockable.

Personally, I been unimpressed with the mediocre gains Intel has been giving us. I almost bought a 5820K last year, AMD wasn't an upgrade option for me. So I ended up buying an X5660 brand new for $85, and got another 6 GB of RAM. I will upgrade this rig when I can get an 8 core for $600.

For now, that was the best upgrade I made to extend the life of X58. This thread made my decision easier

My long winded point is to vote with your wallet! I tried telling people about the whole K biz when it came out with SB, but since people bought it in droves, the practice continued.

i'll pay $100 premium on top of a K for a non-k with all the k features and non k features and perhaps even ECC support and that its not ended with a K suffix so no im not too cheap to buy a K

Sounds like you want a Xeon wink.gif

Even if everyone in the world, one by one, go to intel, and yell "I disapprove!!!" and then 5 minutes later go to the store and buy an intel CPU, those complaints are meaningless.
The only way to not accept what X company is doing, is buying something else.

You don't like what intel are doing? buy AMD.
You don't like what nvidia are doing? Buy AMD.
You don't like what apple are doing? Buy samsung, buy LG, buy HTC, etc etc.
You don't like what google are doing? Buy apple.
You don't like what microsoft are doing? Move to free linux builds.
You don't like what intel, amd, nvidia, apple, samsung, google, etc etc, are doing? Go live in a cave.

The only way to complain and make any effect at all, is to use your wallet. That is how companies change their ways. No other way.

So if you still buy it after you complain, your complaint is meaningless.

indeed except majority of the xeons dont overclock

the thing is the K is meant to be the top of the hierarchy in terms of CPU, nothing should be missing or gimped from it.

yeh im still extending the life of my x58 platform, gave it a 6 core and a USB3 card.

i've also an AMD rig, issue is AMD performance just isnt there where it counts while a much older intel would still roast its arse.

honestly buying AMD isnt a solution, its like instead of getting a sports car (k series) or a regular car (non-k) you opt for a moped (AMD)

until AMD actually produces something on par, sadly intel would remain the dominant monopoly for x86 cpu

This is being thrown around so many times.

Please do tell me why exactly is AMD a bad choice for your every day person? Chrome opens up 0.001 seconds slower? If you're going for an non-K version that means mostly AMD would suffice for you as well. (If we leave gaming out) Heck, most of our work PC's were upgraded and they are now all running on i3's and used for Office and some custom programs.

But that's just my opinion.

Yup you're right, if you look hard enough though, you can find overclockable Xeons like the E5-2650L for example, which is an 8 core chip. I know someone on this forum who got that chip for $125! That's a much better investment than a 5960X IMO.

I'm planning to build a couple servers with those chips.

Oh, and like I said in my previous post, I never understood why VT features are taken away from the K chips. That was another reason I went the Xeon route.

My point was that for anyone on X58+, AMD does not offer us any viable "upgrade" options. I will go as far as saying that AMD is literally not an option for us.

I can show you benches of course, but that's pretty much common knowledge now. My X5660 can comfortably run at 4.4 with HT ON, on AIR.

Well, that's purely understandable and you are right, anything X58 and up, AMD is not for you. I was more thinking about new builds.

For new and budget builds, they're definitely an option. I wish they would make an APU with a 7970 caliber GPU! wink.gif

For new and budget builds, they're definitely an option. I wish they would make an APU with a 7970 caliber GPU! wink.gif

That would be an insta buy for me. But they would need either L4 or HBM on board to feed it...

We can hope though. Intel really needs an kick to the butt already. Either for their prices or to push an actual upgrade out the door. And hopefully that is what Zen will bring so we can have some competition again.
