If you have a i7 6700, you can't run your DDR4 RAM higher than 2133mhz, slower than what DDR3 is easily capable of?

I remember the days of physically modifying your rig to OC.

I still need my soldering iron.

This is a real shame, I thought that they would have gotten the go ahead from Intel to allow overclocking on non K CPUs?
Really...? -_-
I mean if they had straight up implemented a new way to block overclocking for the next generation I wouldn't have been surprised or cared too much.
But they just got rid of the one reason I was even considering a skylake build.

Hopefully it hurts sales and they eventually go back to selling chips without being locked down..... LOL

It won't hurt sales one bit. It impacts a very small number of their units. Their bank account won't even register it.

It boggles my mind that some people here are actually supporting Intel. Do you guys not remember back to the late 90s - mid 2000s when almost all CPUs were multiplier-locked, and factory unlocked processors didn't exist? If you wanted to overclock, you had to rely on FSB OCing provided by your motherboard. It wasn't until 2004 or so when manufacturers started coming out with unlocked processors - the $900 P4 EE and Athlon FX-51 - vastly out of reach for the majority of people. If you wanted to multiplier OC, you had to physically modify your processor.

This website likely wouldn't exist if it weren't for motherboards providing overclocking features on otherwise locked processors. Now you're telling people to just suck it up and by the unlocked part, and that it's okay for Intel to tell motherboard manufacturers what to do?

Before that all CPUs had unlocked multipliers but people kept relabeling CPUs and selling people OCed parts as the higher end CPU. That was money not going in Intel's pocket, the consumer was willing to pay more but Intel only sold the lower end chip.

Now that the CPU tells the bios what it is everything should be unlocked. Why not? Locking is an extra manufacturing step that costs them money. It is probably to keep RMAs down. tongue.gif

Doesn't come unexpected, but completely renounces the possibility of me building an intel budget rig anytime soon. Unlucky intel, not wanting those dollars! I mean euros. thumb.gif
