upgrading because a single game has lack optimization or excesive vram usage? and get performance of a GTX 980 OC?

I have just 1 r9 290 and run average games at 4k60+ at med+ fine. Games like FC3 and Blood Dragon, CS:GO, Warface, BF3, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel, Starcraft 2, Skyrim, all MOBAs, most RPGs all run well at med+, generally high or ultra. Of course with the most demanding games like Crysis 3, Witcher, etc. you might have to lower res but consider how often you actually play those games vs. less demanding games and if its worth the $$ to play those at 4k instead of 2 or 3k.

Get the monitor first and then see if you really need to upgrade. U might be surprised at what 1 290 can handle.

+1 to consider the 290 and hold out for new GPUs. 290 crossfire to hold out for new GPUs is also an idea.

I voted 390 CF for bang for buck right now. If you want to stick to the cards for a while, the extra memory might be nice. But you don't need it right now as far as I can tell.

Only downside is, if it doesn't work in some games. In that case, and you want to stick with the card(s) for a while, then Fury(X) would be attractive. (realistically, the 4GB is probably going to be good enough for a good while, with some settings not at ultra. Running 4k ultra sounds like a bad idea anyway, with today's cards.)
