I know I'm not telling you anything you don't know but I've been doing this for years and this is the first time I;ve run into it

Try reinstalling windows again.

You're missing a huge part of the story: what happens next? You're not telling me everything. You're not helping anyone understand precisely what's happening. "I can't update Windows" can mean many different things. You need to explain precisely what you are seeing when you attempt to update Windows. Don't tell me how you get into Windows Update. Just tell me what happens when you try to update! Tell me each and every little thing that happens.

You're still not telling me what I want to know, Barry. If we can't get our wires uncrossed, then I will be completely unable to help you.

What he is trying to ask you is when you hit the update button, does it freeze, does it BSOD, it just stays at "installing" but never moves? ... honestly with a fresh install of windows i find that the updates take a while. From what i remember its several GB large.

It just sits on the page saying "checking for update" I can go online, the computer is fine otherwise. In all realty I could give them the computer and on one would be the wiser.

My suggestion is to leave it alone while its doing that. Again, from my experience, the files are rather large and depending on your internet speed it can be a while.
