This is an interesting business decision. I wonder if Apple will claim it's a mistake or if they will maintain their position and force users to use an Apple official technician.

This has been the case since the iPhone 6 was first released. This is seriously old news.

This is strange. How can they even tell if a repair was made by a non apple person? Surely it can't tell you've replaced your glass, screen or battery...

edit, nvmd. I see it only applies to the home button being replaced or damaged.

Hmm, could this have been an implementation of a security feature?

From what I've read apparently it is tied to the replacement or repair of the home button by a non apple technician, the home button has finger print recognition built-in.

Perhaps it's a security feature implemented so someone couldn't modify the home button in a way which allows them to gain access to the device without the fingerprint it was registered to?

I suppose a meaningful way of detecting whether the home button has been replaced by a non apple technician is by giving the home button it's own unique identifier when it is first manufactured with the device. The apple technician must then change the unique identifier of the replacement home button, or even change the unique identifier within the device to one from the new replacement button.

This would protect the device from being tampered with by others, and then sent to Apple to be fixed. Or simply to protect the device if someone was robbed and then the thief gained access to the device by modifying the home button which has fingerprint recognition built in.

This is purely speculation on my part, however it sounds quite plausible if the phone is able to detect whether or not it had received modifications from a non Apple technician, that possibly means that the phone has components which are registered to it. thinking.gif

However I'm not sure of the statistics of how many people are encountering this problem, and if they had all been modified by a non apple technician, so it's not really clear at the moment.

It could simply be an error or a bug in the software update, which coincidentally occurs with phones which have been modified by a non apple tech.

This is the kind of thing that should get the regulators out with their neck stepping boots to put apple (or any corp that pulls shenanigans like this) back in it's place. Alas, sorry about that oligopoly you guys live in down in the states.

Apple doesn't like end-users using non-Apple parts in their phones? Shocker.....

Still, this one is touching the line for me. At what point do you own the hardware and are free to modify it? Another point to consider, would the ruling on "Jail Breaking" be of use here? Jail Breaking was ruled legal and in the realm of the owner, so can that extend to hardware?

Let's see how Apple replies.
