I recently updated to a Gigabyte gaming-5 z170 and an i7-6700 (non-K). I also RMA'ed my 780GTX and EVGA was awesome and upgraded me to a 970 SC+. So 90% of my rig is brand new. This is why this problem is difficult to track down.

My monitor is an older dell 3008WFP - probably about 7 years of gaming use. Since upgrading, sometimes it works flawlessly while about 1 in 10 my issue rears its head. I am able to see the BIOS boot screen though the scaling is off (the logo thinks its 16:10 but it has black bars like 4:3), then the windows loading screen flashes(just the bios screen again with the windows 10 loading circle). Then the monitor just... goes to sleep. It will repeat this every time I restart until I rig up another connection to the GPU (usually DP), boot into windows, reconnect the DVI cable and duplicate displays, then disconnect the DP cable.

The DP cable only displays 640x480, windows resolution settings are greyed out, and the Nvidia control panel thinks its displaying 2560x1600 native.

If I hook another monitor up while the issue is happening, it will display just fine with the DVI cable. returning to my dell the problem reappears.

I am stuck trying to pin down the problem to the GPU or the monitor. On one hand, the monitor works fine in BIOS and once I jump start it in windows. On the other hand, GPUs tend to just completely give up and not need this type of work-around. Also, with the monitors age it is slower to wake up from sleep and perhaps the GPU doesn't recognize it fast enough.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled the nvidia drivers and I'm running the latest 361.75. The other monitor I use to test works perfect at 1920x1200 on DVI.

I need to find a way to pin the problem down to the GPU or the monitor.
