I would argue that Beats aren't a fashion accessory at all, people don't buy Beats because of how they look, the only thing that matters is that little Beats logo.

Beats are a mass marketing induced trend, how they look, sound or their quality is almost entirely irrelevant.

It's started a discussion on OCN already and the article has the potential to widen the perspectives of the readers. It's far from being pointless. I do agree with your point about not having a universal single answer and it applies for almost all consumer products, whether it be electronics, cars, clothing, tools, etc.

I think it's a bit of both. They are definitely more stylish than most headphones (subjective), but you are right with the brand recognition being far more important. It's a social status show-off type of item, like designer bags. There's a big difference between overpaying for a quality item vs overpaying for the brand, with the latter being the social norm.

Agreed. I've met a bunch of people (mainly gamers/streamers) who purchased these cat ear headphones. They sound awful and do not feel comfortable to wear, but they do look somewhat cool at night time or with a music-themed cosplay.

In my opinion, they're definitely more stylish than some headphones that were never designed to be stylish, but when it comes to actual stylish headphones, they're bottom of the bin. I think Beats headphones with the beats logo removed look like $20 tasteless Chinese rubbish. But this is indeed subjective.

And while there's definitely some comparison between Beats and designer clothing/accessories, its a pretty flawed comparison. Designer clothing/accessories while carrying a premium price because of the brand, are usually still pretty high quality and use quite premium materials.
Beats on the other hand, use cheap materials and are cheaply made.

I would say usually what you pay for with designer accessories is usually about 70% brand, 30% design and quality. With Beats its more like 96% brand, 4% design and quality.

But I must say, having tried newer Beats headphones, they have improved in the audio quality side of things, so that's at least worth something.

If people want to spend money on headphones as fashion accessories, more power to them. I'll take an ugly pair that performs better any day, especially if it costs less.
