The 390 is a tiny bit faster.
On the other hand its also a massive power hog compared and it might be 5-20 FPS faster but it also draws like 100 watts more doing it.

Benches are pretty much neck and neck, but the 390 has 8 gigs of memory. The 970 has 4 gigs. Vram is a definite factor in modern pc gaming.

If he is playing at 1080P VRAM dont matter all that much unless you run games with texture packs.

Only a a few games like GTA V and Shadow Of Mordor uses more then 4 GB of VRAM.

That maybe true, but personally iI would not recommend a 970 for a 2016 build.

Well, I would be using texture mods for games like Skyrim and Fallout 4.

I used to always go nvidia because they had better driver support and games were more often optimized for nvidia cards. Is this not the case anymore?

EDIT: Seems that modded Skyrim hits that 4gb wall of vram on the gtx970 pretty fast. Perhaps I should revise my build for a 390 then.

EDIT 2: Here's my new build so far:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($256.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($133.55 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($94.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Crucial MX200 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 390 8GB Nitro Video Card ($308.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $884.50
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-02-07 00:17 EST-0500

How does it look? Should I go for the 3200 memory or something lower? I don't plan to OC unless my CPU starts to lag behind a few years down the road.

Yah, for modded Skyrim, it would be safer to go with more vram. It may not use all 8 but it can go over 4GB. Make sure whatever CPU cooler you get will fit and not hit those rams. Go with the fastest RAM, DDR4 will be around for awhile. You might even use them for future builds or upgrade. The DDR3 I'm using for my existing AMD and Intel rigs are hand-me-downs from my X58 rig. lol

This is the cooler I have now on my current system. I'd like to reuse this if it's compatible. Link

My power supply I have still as well? It's linked in my OP.

I don't even remember why I bought that cooler in particular, it's 7 years old by now.
