[TF] Pirate Group Suspends New Cracks To Measure Impact On Sales

The China-based cracking group that recently bemoaned Denuvo's anti-piracy system as all but unbreakable has delivered a second surprise announcement. 3DM says it will stop working on single-player games cracks for at least a year so it can assess whether genuine sales will be affected.

One of the hottest topics in the game piracy scene in late 2015 surrounded the Avalanche Studios/Square Enix title Just Cause 3.
. .

. .

All eyes had been on notorious Chinese game cracking group/forum 3DM to come up with the goods but last month the group delivered a killer blow to its fans.

According to the leader of the group, the very public ‘Bird Sister’ (also known as Phoenix), the game was proving extremely difficult to crack. In fact, Bird Sister said that current anti-piracy technology is becoming so good that in two years there might not be pirated games anymore.

“We just had an internal meeting. Starting at the Chinese New Year, 3DM will not crack any single-player games,” Bird Sister says.

For those wondering, the Chinese New Year is next Monday, February 8.

What is perhaps most interesting, however, is the group’s apparent reasoning for ceasing their cracking activities. Denuvo was previously cited as a headache for the group but this time around that technology isn’t mentioned.

Instead, 3DM essentially indicates they’re taking part in an experiment to see how the lack of cracks affects the legitimate market.

“We’ll take a look at the situation in a year’s time to see if genuine sales have grown,” Bird Sister says.

Lets TRY to avoid discussing the morality of pirating; it gets no where. thumb.gif

but instead:

so has protection done enough now to inhibit pirating?

will this "experiement" lend any credence whether or not pirating effects sales?

While there are people that pirate first and buy later I don't think that sales will go down.

I think it will only have a very small impact on sales. I have no idea why developers/publishers think that 1 pirated file equals 1 lost sale rolleyes.gif

I bet 98% of people that download something illegally have never intended to buy it in the first place, Especially those who come from regions where it is hard to afford.

All in all I think that sales will go slightly up, but the most important things for PC gamers are :

- a fair price
- accessibility
- reasonable PC port

If you met these criteria as a developers/publishers (and your game is somewhat desireable) then you will have good sales no matter what.

I don't know a single person who still pirates and a couple of my friends used to pirate sometimes, but now with Steam and sales I don't see it happening at all around me.

There's too much competition for people to care as much as they do today, about these games anyway; making em harder to get initially will just lead to less people guilt tripping themselves into buying mediocre games. Maybe! thumb.gif

At least that's a line of reasoning that could definitely apply to some people to some extent!

Won't really matter as there are other groups that will pick up the slack and continue on, if there's a will there's a way.

This statement should have been made by the publisher and not a crackng group. It's like all the lions in Africa say that we're not gong to kill any antelope to see how it affects their grazing habits.

So what are they benchmarking the base sales on? Aggregate PC games sales? While controlling for other extraneous variables? I doubt it. Something doesnt add up.

Yep. I use to buy titles on day one but between real life and so many disappointments I don't see the value in it anymore.
