[TF] Pirate Group Suspends New Cracks To Measure Impact On Sales - Page 12

IIRC, Valve keeps 30% of the sale value which comes out of the developer/publishers pocket, even if a user requests a refund so that will also encourage developers/publishers to not release broken games. I think that is the main reason why Warner Brothers removed Batman Arkham Knight from Steam not long after it was released. I'm not sure about Origin other than they do offer refunds as well.

If that is correct, then it's really a win-win for consumers.

Exactly. There are proper legal channels that allow one to try out the games today without downloading a game.

I understand that its easy to just torrent the games instead of trying it out on Steam/Origin, but at the same time you will support cracking teams that work for people that doesnt want to pay. So while you know with yourself that you will support the devs with buying the game if it works like it should, you are indirectly supporting those who doesnt give a damn about supporting the devs and the industry. Which is no good.

Origin is EA-exclusive more or less, so the publisher and seller are the same entity. There's no "penalty" for releasing a broken game in the same sense as the penalty on Steam, assuming what you've said is true.

Doesn't mean they should, because controversy can get loud. (*cough* Mass Effect 3 *cough*)

Honestly, at this point, piracy is more of a hassle than buying it through a legal channel. The only time I really don't see an ethical issue with piracy is when the game has been out of print for however many years and a seller like GOG doesn't have the rights to it. Abandonware, in other words. It's still illegal, but it's more justifiable than wanting the newest AAA release but not wanting to spend money.

I recall someone getting a warning from Valve because of too much refunds requested so....not really, the Steam refunds are not "demos" unless you want to end with your account banned.

I think andrews told me this originally, and if I remember correctly, it was nothing more than a temporary ban on refunds because the guy returned, like, 10 in a day or something crazy.

I believe there'll be no discernible difference in the number of sales. I'm sure someone will find a way of spinning this and think of an excuse to say 5 gorillion dollars could be saved if [insert inanity here]. What method could you even use to measure this while discounting other variables like customer interest?

Besides, there's the 2 hour limit. Numerous times I have played a game that started good and became crap down the line. The refund system is for returning broken games, it's not a demo system.

It wasn't me who told you that, but I think it is true. For the vast majority of people who aren't getting refunds just because they can, that won't be an issue.

My post was removed in the purge! biggrin.gif My argument was we are just told "here is FastTwitchyShooter 12 no demo no reviews (sometimes) until release. Buy it NOW"

Pfft Why so i can wait for patches to fix often glaring/game breaking bugs on day one. People mentioned that you can get demo's for most titles released now and pirating to "try" is not needed. Funny i searched for demo's for the last two games i was interested in purchasing.......

I would still be looking NOW because there were none. So i should just play the odds with my cash (i purchase RETAIL boxes NOT "give us your money and you can rent it" downloads) before someone says "Steam returns policy tho..." I don't care i OWN my discs not "borrow" them. So people who buy hard copies of games are dicing with buying a Lemon. 90% of piracy would STOP if software houses offered demos.

Not "indie" games actual AAA titles. You know why..... Because the publishers know they are pushing out unfinished sloppy code running for the lowest common denominator. They know if reviews aired BEFORE release the honest (!) review sites NOT taking the gold coins would pan it and "hurt the Corporate image of [some poor Dev house/publishers]". I bet if someone with some sense could work out if piracy has INCREASED in relation to demo's of games DECLINING.

I have the maths skills of 6 month roadkill LMAO!! Me i have a VERY short attention span and i can uninstall a game in minutes. Case in point Far Cry 3. Installed played first mission (getting out of cage) and dumb AI keeps getting in my way so i KEEP getting shot in the back. Reload after death..... AI blocks my view/exit again. This repeats until is say..... Nah and hit uninstall. Now my fault hmmmm some yes some no. Dumb companion AI and low tolerance for repeating the same thing over and over when i feel my "skills" are not always the problem. Never played it and removed it from my PC straight after.

Now had i been able to download a "short demo only mission" i perhaps would have spotted the ropey AI pathway finding/dumb companion etc. And i would of said "not for me (for real i have fibre so downloading 30+GB doesn't faze me in the slightest) and i would of uninstalled the few GB demo mission and that would of been that. Where was my demo......

Offer demo's and watch piracy fall. But alas you wont because you are peddling unfinished failware.

Thanx.

Then what about returning physical copy then ?

For me buying from key selling site or buying physical copy is the only way to get a price adjustment.
Steam itself has the same prices as germany/UK which have 5 times greater wages.

I would stop complaing if steam decided to introduce PLN as well as adjusting the price according to wage/price of wealthier countries.

With Twitch/Youtube and tons of benchmarks to see performance, i don't see the point in having demos anymore. It's easy to see if a game is well made and whether or not it's for you.

Abusing the Steam refund system does not count as a demo. tongue.gif
