Best fans?

Hey guys and gals,

I built my PC a few years ago now, and I've currently got the 3000 RPM GentleTyphoons in there which do a great job of cooling (and I love the stealth black look), but theyre freaking loud and use a lot of power on my fan controller!

I didn't know if GentleTyphoons were still the best of the best, but I was looking for any suggestions on alternatives that do an excellent job of cooling but are also quiet.

Price is not a problem, and I will be throwing 21 of these into my rig. smile.gif

Hi, what do you expect from these fans ? To provide the same airfllow at the same RPM you use (which is .....?) and be quieter ? Also what size of fans are you/will you be using ?

Edit: @doyll okaaayy ? @xyeLz oh and BTW will these be used as case fans or rad fans ?

Fans are only one part of a cooling system. Case venting, GPU and CPU cooler and their heat, and how much noise is acceptable are are equally important .. and those are just the leading variables. There are many more.

What radiators are you using?
How restrictive they are can make a big difference in what fans will work best?

How do you control the fan speed?

Hey guys! Thanks for the responses. In regards to your questions:

@MadjinnSayan I'm expecting to run them at the same speed as my 3000 RPMs which are currently running at 40% because my controller can't handle them at full RPMs, and hopefully have them be quieter. I figured the Gentle Typhoon 1850s or 2100s would be decent, but can't really find them anymore and figured the market may have changed since I haven't looked at fans in years. I stream/YouTube so the quieter fans are definitely desired. I use 120mm fans in my PC. IIRC, I have 8 fans in a push/pull to pull in cool air. I have another 6 fans in a push/pull to extract the heat. The remaining fans are case fans in a separate chamber of the PC. So I guess it's a mix. smile.gif Thanks mate!

@doyll Thanks for the response! I do have restrictive rads, Black Ice GTXs. I have a Lamptron FC Touch controller. Doesn't have enough power for all my existing 3000s to run at max, but that would be way too loud anyways.

Right now, when I put them at 60%, I idle at about 25C on both my overclocked CPU and 980 Ti GPU. When I put them down to 40%, I idle around 32C.

What is the rpm at 40%? Assuming everything is under water you might be better served with a thread in that forum rather than air cooling. EK Vardar might be good. Nidec-Servo Gentle Typhoon are some of the best with graeat history.
I'm going to watch for awhile before further comments. Seems {'m being trolled by someone now.

What about the load temps ? Ii think they might be more important lol., also at what rpm do you find the noise of your build bearable (if not confortable) ? do you always use them at 40% ? what is your 'routine' when you switch from idle to load applications ?

@geggeg has done a bunch of fan tests on his sight. http://thermalbench.com/category/fans/

Some of the best testing I've ever seen was done by Martin, but he hasn't done anything in a couple of years now.

While the landscape has changed a bit, the GTs still sit at the top of the heap for your usage. No other fan has quite matched the lower rpm noise/performance of the GTs. So, your line of thinking with the 1850 or 2100 is a good one. Personally, I have always preferred the 1850 since any rpm beyond that is way too loud for my liking, even only using 3-4 of them (but to each their own), and 1850 provides more than enough airflow for almost any rad.

They are, in fact, readily available again at Dazmode - https://www.dazmode.com/store/product/gentle-typhoon-performance-radiator-fan-2150rpm-68cfm-black-edition-pwm/ , https://www.dazmode.com/store/product/scythe_gentle_typhoon_2150rpm_69cfm_30db_fan/

How you are controlling your fans would be what would make the difference as to which one to get. Almost everything I use is PWM.

The Gentle Typhoon remains the top fan, if Dazmode tests are correct.

I think that only the low speed (edited) and the 4250 rpm variants are in production these days. You could mod your Gentle Typhoons into PWM fans as well. All of the high speed Gentle Typhoons can do this. The 3000 rpm variant is gone.

See this:
http://www.overclockers.com/Gentle-Typhoon-AP-29-to-PWM/

You'd have to modify all of the fans, but I think that it might be worth it for quiet operation in most cases, with on demand noise as needed.
