New Fractal Node 605 HTPC Rig

I built this with a Fractal Node 605 case. I liked the looks, thought I'd give it a whirl.

I wanted a Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H, but they were out of stock everywhere. I let Google Shopping look, bingo! Found one, or so I thought. It actually took me to a page at B&H, I've bought stuff there before, so I paid up and went on about my business. I never noticed that I had bought a GA-H97M-D3H until it came and I thought they'd shipped the wrong board, but when I looked at my order, sure enough. And so that's how I ended up with a i5-4690K in a H97 board. Not worth the hassle to return the board or the processor, so I just used them.

Rest of the parts

16GB Crucial Ballistix ram. Yeah, you don't need 16GB in a HTPC, but it's what I bought. After buying a few DDR4 kits, it was so cheap I just didn't care. It was the first low profile DDR3 I came across scrolling down the list, and I wasn't sure how much room I'd have, so it's what I got.

ASUS 970 Mini - cute little 970 with a blower fan, so it exhausts a little heat out. It's short enough to clear the drive brackets, but the power cables came out right in the center of the cross beam in the 605. Notched it a little and it's good to go.

SeaSonic 650X. Yeah, it's bigger than needed, and the PSU police will surely give me a going over, but I've had good service with SeaSonic PSUs and it's the smallest of the X Series.

Noctua NH-L12 - Cool little horizontal double fan design, easy to install and seems to do a fine job so far.

Samsung 850 Pro 256GB. I just wanted a nice system drive, so this is what I bought. It's velcro'ed to the back of the case front so I can get 4 spinners in the drive mounts. Spinners yet to be purchased.

Pioneer BDR-TD05AS Blu Ray burner drive. My first slim format BDR, but I've used full sized Pioneer BDRs in the last couple of builds and they are holding up nicely.

Windows 10 Pro. My first Windows 10 rig, figure I might as well at least try it. It came on a bootable USB drive, that was handy.

Still to buy- storage drives. I use HGST 7K4000 Ultrastar drives in my NAS and my Windows 7 machine. Really nice drives, but they are noisy, Not sure I want them in a HTPC.

Startech PEXHDCAP60L HDMI capture card. I have one in my XRig now, and that thing is slick. Can't say what it's used for, but it's worth (to me) plopping down coin for again.

I still want to add another 120mm case fan blowing on the CPU cooler, but it can be added with the rest of the stuff in there. I swapped directions on the fan by the drive brackets to exhaust to make the airflow across the case.

Surprising amount of room, but cable management is rough. The built in fan controller on the 605 is nice. It's not connected to any fan headers on the mobo, it just runs, but 3 speed adjustable and with an extra pigtail for the additional 120 I'm adding. All the cables coming from the front panel make for a log jam, I already plugged the cables for 4 SATA drives into the PSU and have them stored in one of the brackets for now.

Half hour into a Handbrake encode, 54°C top temp with the fan controller on low. It's basically silent here, and this is probably as hard as it'll ever be pushed.

Not going to dethrone the 4.6GHz overclocked 5960X for top spot in Handbrake speed, but I can start a job and go about other business while it churns.
