AMD APU+GPU Notebook issue!

Thread Starter
So basically I already posted this in the HP support forum and I'm just going to copy and paste it here, because I know you guys are a lot smarter than someone that just gets paid to sit behind a keyboard and manual.. So I'm hoping you guys can help, because I'm about 85% expecting "Technical Support" to go.. Hurrr durr, drivers and stuff? Idk just restore to factory or.. idk Tried turning it off and on again?

---

Product Name: Pavillion 17-G102AX
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So basically the other day I posted here thinking I needed to overclock to get some extra graphical power out of this notebook advertised for work and play.. (er, not so much play so far)
It was only today it clicked in my mind that the reason this laptop isnt performing is because none of the applications (games more than anything else) don't want to use the R7 M360, instead, they only detect or want to use the R5 in the APU!

Don't get confused. The GAMES do not want to use the R7. MSI Afterburner and Radeon Crimson drivers and settings recognise the R7 M360 graphics chip and tells me all of it's info, so the computer knows it's there, however no application opts to use it.

I so far can not find a toggle anywhere that'll let me make everything want to use the R7.

Here's what I've tried:
*In Radeon settings basically turn everything to optimize performance > battery

*In Switchable Application Graphical Settings, manually set all the applications I want to use the R7 to "High Performance" where it was previously set to "Based on Power" in an attempt to make everything boot the R7 for high performance.

*Went into BIOS to see if I could switch anything there, the stock BIOS with this laptop however lets me change ***** all, infact nothing, just lets me view the stats.. Not much of a BIOS if you ask me.

What made me see that the issue was the fact that the laptop is not under powered, it just doesnt want to use the R7 even though it detects it's there and ready to go with drivers installed, is that The Sims 4 was running like crap, though "Ok.. The R7 M60 is mid range.. And can barely run on low, but my girlfriend's desktop which was $200 brand new bottom of the line, maybe not even with dedicated graphics can run this same game on Med-High.. Weird.."
I then thought I'd test Grand Theft Auto 5 for it's limits.. Started fiddling with the graphics.. Got to some decent settings where the edges were a bit smoother and the game didn't look like it came out of 2005 before I hit my limits.. Luckily GTA tells you how much GRAM you're using and what remaining GRAM you have in your er "budget" I guess.
It clicked.
GTA tells me I have a total of 1024MB GRAM...

"Ok?.. No well the R7 runs 2GB memory... Something's up.."
Check Radeon settings

> R7 M360 .. 2048 MB
>APU R5 Graphics .. 1024 MB

BOOM!
Do the math
???
Profit
Missing 1GB of memory

Tl;DR basically in a round about way I explained how I discovered this stupid computer won't utilize it's full R7 M360 capabilities and instead uses the R5 integrated in the APU for EVERYTHING NO MATTER WHAT FOR NO FREAKING REASON.

So here's the real question...
HOW DO I FIX THIS?
I've spent days thinking I'm regretting this laptop.. They sold it to me as casual performance, and they **bleep** lied this piece of junk cant run *****.

There's no options in Radeon, Catalyst, Crimson settings, Windows or even the BIOS to help me make everything finally utilize the discrete, dedicated, 2GB R7 M360!

Thank you for your time, I hope you had some happy reading.

----

So not sure if you guys have encountered this on your desktops using an AMD APU as well as dedicated graphics.. But this is really bugging me, and any help would be appreciated.
As I already said I've tried utilizing everything Windows or Radeon settings has to offer me, the computer knows it's there but the damned thing just won't use it no matter what I click or select in anything.

I'm hoping the answer hasn't been under my eyes the whole time..

Cheers for your time.

i am not very knowledgeable about AMD, but i know Nvidia has an option to choose the preferred graphic interface in its drivers menu, maybe try again to find a similar option in your AMD drivers, you may also try right clicking on the game icon to see if a similar option is given.

Edit : idea :
CAREFUL, DO NOT CASUALLY DO THIS OPERATION, INFORM YOURSELF ON HOW TO HANDLE ANY PROBLEM THAT MAY HAPPEN, though windows may certainely load a universal graphics driver.Make sure to backup your desktop state, because it's annoying when it is changed lol. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
maybe try to disable the APU driver in the device manager after you have somehow set the gpu as the primary gpu.

Every option is set to power performance
Been on the phone to HP for the third time... Their answers each time were
"Drivers"
..
"Factory restore"
..
"Drivers"
So I'm basically done with them, they have nothing helpful to add.
I might try the disabling the APU driver thing.

Tried using high settings in GTA 5 to use 1.6MB of GRAM to see if overloading the APU would boot in the R7, no such luck it keeps running off the APU just really *****.

Seriously thinking of taking it back.. Hopefully they don't f**k me around, build my own goddamn PC with the money, so I know it works.. Screw portability if it doesn't work properly.

Yes, chill out and try my suggestion please.
IMHO next time you buy a laptop with casual gaming in mind, dont choose amd neither for the cpu nor for the gpu, their mobile solutions and market share is dead.

To still try to help, by provideming 'universal' solutions like the driver disable i detailed above.

It's not because you know the economical situations of a manufacturer that you are 'knowleadgeable' about his technologies and sruff, i know Seagate is getting sued because some of their models are unreliable, but i dont know their whole hard drive product line.

Hey guys, thought I'd give you all an update and some closure, even though you most likely forgot about this I'd just like to share the good news.
After a month long f--k around with HP and Harvey Norman I finally got some good customer service out of HN.
I took the laptop back to the store (took it to a closer store to start with and they sent me home and said "the tech guy from the store you got it from will ring you and try to solve your issue, making the trip to the closer store absolutely useless.
So I ended up sucking it up and going to the original store when their senior technician finally got back from holiday on Monday, I explained that I have exhausted all options and the computer is stuffed, tech guy looks at it for 5 mins and hands in the towel.. So they're convinced it's just the laptop and a new one of the same model should work.
Told them I'm not leaving the damn store until I test this (I took GTA 5 on an ext HDD and some of the disks to complete the install)
10 minutes before shutting time.... Same issues the old one was having. I'd say Win10 has mucked it all up or its a design flaw with that model (G102AX/G101AX)
They went above and beyond their legal obligation here..
They offered me a Lenovo Y700-15ISK, featuring an i5-6300HQ, a comparable (but way better in most respects, but it's hard to find a compare site that agrees with another, most sites seem to say it stacks up better, which I'm certain it does) to the A8-7410
And a massive upgrade, a GTX 960m 4GB opposed to the r7 m360
And 8gb DDR4 RAM
The cons: I'm down 2" or so screen, and 8gb RAM I probably wouldn't have used, but I profited pretty much double the power nearly and faster ddr4 ram, and this laptop has better cooling, and the 15" is just better practically instead of slugging around the 17" I guess. I couldn't have my cake and eat it too, something had to give.

So this new thing pretty much maxes GTA 5, which is all I was seeking really, the old laptop with the r7 certainly would not have been capable of that providing it even worked..
My favourite feature: the backlit keyboard..

Originally they wanted me to pay an extra $250 to cover "cost price" (an extra 500 to meet retail price)
Said I don't have $250 and why should I pay because the computer you originally sold me was defective?
Bloke came back from his manager and said "managers in a good mood, you can take it"

Anyway thought I'd share, have some closure, issue solved.
