Why you should probably not buy a CLC cooler - Page 21

Wow. Nice post, OP. The professional hardware review sites seem to avoid or tip-toe around this topic and you did it. Kudos!

I've never used CLCs as I've always favored Air Coolers for CPUs although it seems like GPUs benefit more from water cooling as the temperature reductions are more drastic compared to the CPU.

Seriously though, if you want to watercool then watercool, AIOs are not watercooling (The EK and Swiftechs aside).
As Cyber Locc said, if you want water cooling, do it right. While all CLCs are AIO, not all AIOs are CLC. CLCs are sealed systems with no provision for component replacement, expansion or even to top up coolant. AIOs are component kits that can be manipulated like custom loops. Their pumps have enough flow and lift to handle additional components and their components are far better quality. The weight of a complete CLC without fans is the same or less than just a bare, empty radiator for a component system. Again, the pump, hose, fittings, mount, wiring and coolant combined don't weight any more than just a component radiator.

Some good points here,
As Mega Man points out, while Asecrep has the patent, Swiftech was doing same thing.
When Asetek started what is now known as CLC, they called LCLC (Low Cost Liquid Cooling). Wonder why they changed the name. devil-smiley-019.gif

Rumor has it there is a secret organization of CLC owners and wannabee waters. This group of extremist have a fanatical belief that CLCs are God like in their ability to cool. Combine the above with their wonderland belief in elves, fairies, pixies, etc. and we have a group can blindly believes CLCs have no equals.
Some say this organization started during the dark ages. Others say it started long before .. when people believed in magic and dragons.

No, they are not based on dB. the dB is just part of the data collected. The dats is for CPU temperature, room ambient, cooler intake air temp and dB(A) of cooler.
ciarlatano's tested both at full speed / maximum dB(A) and at with AIO/CLCs running at <40dB
Even at full speed CLC is only 3c cooler,
At 40dB(A) it is only 1c cooler .. but still 7dB louder than D15
The only AIO at same dB(A) as D15 is Swithtech H220X and it is not a CLC

I wish I could find the thread with testing by a member here using a Nepton 280L vs a Phanteks TC14PE using high speed fans. Similar results to what @doyll posted above.

I think a lot of what is said comes from the need to justify the purchase. No one likes to admit they got taken, and I think there is a whole "every random forum teen is getting better performance than a custom loop in total silence, so I must be too!".

Then there is the fact that Swiftech did it first, and did it the right way....it was just too expensive and scary for many.

Much of the problem is testing in cases using room ambient as baseline. doh.gif
I'm sorry but using a case to compare coolers does not give us a 'real world' testing environment. Even your own test system has 8-9c warmer cooler intake temp. And how many users have a system just like yours? They are the only one is the same 'real world'. So either all the rest of us are in some altered 'real world', or you (and maybe a few other with identical systems) are.

The anomaly is how all coolers you've tested can maintain the same cooler intake air temp. All other testing I've seen and what I've done show the cooler intake air temp changing dependent on cooler and / or case fan speed changes with system load.

The test results I posted above for Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme are quite different from those done in cased test systems. Reason is cooler intake air temp goes up dramatically when the TY-143 fans speed up and move 100-130cfm through the cooler while case continues to flow 50-80cfm to cooler. Their additional airflow means they are forced to make of the difference in airflow (30-70cfm)eating the heated cooler exhaust .. with resulting higher CPU temps than if cooler intake airflow was not heating.

End result is most owners of air coolers using high performance fans see very little of the performance gain they should have.

Just finished installing my custom loop, now my pc won't boot. I have to drain my loop, disconnect the tubings, take apart the gpu blocks, and put the stock cooler on to diagnose
post #209 of 465
did you use hard tubing ? and is this your first waterloop ?

did you test everything before doing water ?

What exactly is happening? You may not need to touch your loop at all.
