[DSOG] Rise of the Tomb Raider – DirectX 12 Option Appears On The Game’s Launcher - Page 5

To those folk that think directx12 is "overhyped" - Rise of the Tomb Raider is a directx12 game on Console. It uses asynchronous compute for the volumetric lighting.

I heard that the devs dropped directx12 support after they discovered a regression of performance on Nvidia - this is not fact though, but it makes sense to me.

How can you make such a claim when there are next to no Direct X 12 games available at this moment in time?

That's like saying the next generation consoles or GPUs are a failure before we've even seen them.

I am pretty sure Ashes of Singularity was marketed as using DX12, it's terrible so far. Whoopdy, low budget CPU's got a boost. We saw that with Mantle which is what technology we are seeing at play with Ashes using DX12. Or I am a complete blind man and I never knew Ashes used DX12 because the developers forgot to mention it and we all figured it out.

Because it's true. DirectX has been terrible ever since it moved to the Microsoft Platform SDK...

Assassin's Creed DX10.1 anyone?

In many cases performance was on par or even worse than DX11, with exceptions of a few older AMD cards that seemed to do better in DX12 in one game (Ashes was it?). Maybe this game will finally show DX12 power, but so far I'm very skeptical and underwhelmed by DX12.

As has been said with almost every release of every Direct X... Barring Direct X 9c.

Uh, I don't see how there is any irony there at all. If you think API's only fundamental reason for existence are there to make development easier, I guess you might think its ironic.

All I see is poor design and architecture built on a poorly designed architecture to abstract complexity from a developer perspective where it rightly belongs.

That is why mantle was written, and why Vulkan is not backwards compatible with OpenGL, they hit the reset button on the bad design and poor architecture to reduce the bloat and increase the hardware performance.

Not saying this to attack you, I just don't understand this point of view coming from someone else who apparently designs and develops API's.

Uhh, I don't think it's the only fundamental reason. Like I already said, I simplified it, it was just a comment that came to mind about another comment, and I wasn't trying to make an argument at all - it was half joking. Again, you're trying way too hard to look deep into that comment and extrapolate from it. That's fine the first time, but I'm not really sure why you're ignoring what I've told you since. I'm not really sure how else to say it. And yes, I do design and write APIs and as the lead engineer on those projects, nonetheless.

Your interpretation of my original comment is wrong, and maybe that's my fault for not putting a disclaimer or being more specific, but I can assure you that the words you're putting in my mouth are not what I think.

The above results can be achieved by replacing ROTTR.exe with the original executable from the retail version. Steam owners can do so by opting into the Beta branch.

I am not putting any words in your mouth. But I guess you were expecting more credence would be heeded to the "I know I simplified it" comment.

I just don't see any irony there, at all. It's not me reading anything into it either, there is simply nothing ironic by definition about a poor API design, or requiring the API to be utilized correctly for it to function optimally.

I really don't care either way, I'm just going to chock it up to poor word choice and move along. As you clearly are knowledgeable enough to balk at my technical assertions, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and drop it.
