Need suggestions for logo plate.

Okay guys I need some suggestions on what to do for a logo plate. The plate will server 2 purposes, it will cover up some unsightlys and close the case in better. The second is the Logo, I want it to have the Build name on it the question is how.

At first I thought laser cut panel with a panel behind for lighting, however I contacted 2 PC laser cutters I knew about both refused me and said they will not do it. They said they wont do it becasue it will not work it is not strong enough, and that I should look at aluminum. I was about to contact PPCs and see what they think but in fear of the same reply figured it was time to start looking at other options.

So now on to what I need / trying to do.

This is the Case, you see that little lip hanging down that is what I will use to attach the plate. The sides of the case protrude past this lip the thickness of there metal (1.5mm) so I need the top most plate to be flush with those sides. This means the front most plate must be 1/16 inch, however behind the lip the plates can be thicker. This was the issue the custom laser cutter (they were pc mod places) had they said that 1/16inch wasn't strong enough. Despite the fact there will be more plates behind it in the case of a laser logo.

Here is an example of what I want to achieve, this of course is not the font I want but I do not have the correct font installed on this pc so I did this rough draft for now.

So my new idea is to have the plate made out of aluminium (same as the case). And get it powder coated black and then have the logo powder coated on? Can this be done?

I also seen people mention clear coating over vinyl decals, This would also be a workable option for me. The panels are I believe 1.5mm before being powder coated, so I need to get some calipers to see exactly how much play I have for a post coated panel, however a little thicker wouldn't be bad just not a lot thicker.

So does anyone know if that is achievable with powder coating and if so someone that could do such a thing? Also any other logo ideas would be more than appreciated, however I need it to be there and be flush, my tray is flipped and this causes the usb connectors and vandal switches to be seen those need to be covered. I am also going to use Mesh between the sides to the drive bays so the entire front is closed in.

Here is a pic with the top flipped so you can see what I mean.

I also moved the drive cage forward to be able to attach mesh to it, to close the case up.

EDIT the side panels are 2mm thick with there powder coating.

I will give it a try to answer your questions.

Powdercoating aluminum is fine but remember aluminum is prone to out gassing (bubbles that rise up in the powder). Do not let that get in your way. It can be done but usually requires a base coat first.

Now to your question about putting powder over powder. If you want the writing on the plate then the plate would need to be masked off except for the writing and powdered in what ever color first. Then the writing masked over with the main exposed and the main color applied. At least this is the only way I have ever seen it done and I have a lot hours watching stuff be powdered.

Having the whole thing done in a color and then applying a decal can easily be done and you just clear coat it yourself at home. If you want the powder place to clear coat it after applying the decal then I would make sure the decal can handle high heat (excess of 450f) and check with the powder people to see if the powder will even adhere to the decal which I suspect it will not.

Powder adds very little in thickness so do not worry about that. It has never made a difference in anything i have had done and that includes ram sticks. I get almost every one of my computer components powdered and never worried about thickness. Just make sure you inform the people doing the work to preserve the stuff you need preserved. Such as screw hole or anything you do not want powder in but they usually get it anyways. Still best to be vocal about it.

As far as other ideas for a plate I will leave that up to you. Design is a subjective thing.

Wish you well and let us see the results when you are finished.
