What the developer is saying is spot on, it shows a great disrespect for artistic merit and for computer games as a medium, as art. As something that can't be taken seriously. There is a reason why there are age ratings. When Apple then decides to come in and apply a set of their own rules on top of that is when you get to see the indiscriminate power that a walled garden has over people's choice.
Since when do parental responsibilities conflict with ratings?
You cannot have just stamp "art" on everything. Those that are outstanding are art since art can never be only 'mediocre'.
You are falling for the same oversight as these so-called-artists who think they can pass themselves over unsupervised with connotations better than they really are. Unless they are contesting to win a Captain Obvious award, or something.
Apple is protecting themselves against the controversy that bound to happen since kids use these products, "we design them as we would for our own families," remember? Do I need to recite their philosophy in your face? Imagine the epic proportions of the scandal if they didn't stick to their word.
Yes, books are getting censored, too - or haven't you heard Amazon Kindle and their policies?
Like it or not, the product and the people using them are the highest priority, Apple is the moderator and developers have to comply with the rules. If anybody has the slightest notion of doubt in what I say, better get your facts checked.

What controversy? They allow GTA on their store. The Witcher 2? Lots of other games that were already mentioned that contain more than your fair share of adult themes and imagery. And like the developer said, they encourage and take advantage of money making tactics in games that take advantage of the crowd they pretend to protect.

And no, you don't need to recite their philosophy, it's well known to be full of inconsistencies and indiscriminate use of arbitrary power. It's their rules, that much is a given.

Well, those "suggestive" themes, dilemmas are harder to resolve fact from fiction for the children when there are cues they can follow while higher moral dilemmas go right off the top of their heads. A kid playing GTA cannot follow the backstory, but can keep track of cars-running-shooting without ill-intent since they don't understand the concept of life, though a kid would not play the game altogether if it wasn't appealling for the child. Now, wrapping the same concept around a "virtual baby" is just the opposite and asking for trouble since there isn't any symbolism to target an age group higher than the minimum perceptive age.
Do I have to describe why making games about personal dysphorias is not a good idea and cannot be idealized as art in and of itself?

What does this even have to do with Art?

It's not like the art card has been played as defense or anything.
The art debate is entirely about Apple's (perceived) disdain for (some) games, but it shouldn't have any role in what gets into the app store at what age ratings.

Even mediocre art is still art, anyhow, but being art doesn't mean something's suited for all ages.

How is it not playing the passive aggressive game when that is what they have said in an interview. I'm not even on a tangent.

What game? If it's passive aggressive, and still art, it can definitely get an age rating. That's what I'm trying to get at!

You're on a hyperbole. It isn't art if it is a running commentary of a symptom relating to a disease. Art has to be original. This is not a medium where you can pass on your stupid ideas. That is all I'm saying.

Art is a social process, that necessitates also the mediocre, in my view.

edit: by the way, art most of the time, is not about being original. It's about being original for bit, while relying on an existing framework of ideas for the rest. See literally all major artistic epochs. And some more direct examples of appropriation in classical music. Step by step, mediocre work by mediocre work, you get a little closer to someone (else) putting all the fitting pieces together, to create something great. Just my 2 cents.

I'd really like for Valve to submit the critically acclaimed Half-Life game to the Apple store and see how they would react.

In case someone is wondering why, just look up the final enemy in the game:

While I don't agree with their decision I do believe they have the right to it. Its their store and if for some reason (although hypocritical) they want to not sell something they can.
