Need an Audiophiles suggestion on headphones for music

Thread Starter
I need a new pair of headphones specifically for music. I have the Razer Chimera 5.1 headsets for gaming and they sound fantastic...if I were talking about gaming. But because you cannot disable the surround it dulls music which is mostly stereo, so I'm looking for a nice pair for music listening.

Here's the thing, I'm looking for experience, I can search all day on the internet for headphones that people say are the best and recommend but those are usually more niche music based, like electronica or rap, I'm looking for something that will really bring Heavy Metal to life.

Something no higher than $200. A nice pair that can complement music like Deeds of Flesh and Spawn of Possession

ATH-M50

Very good for the price. I'd also suggest DT770 Pros for a little bit fuller of a sound with slightly less bass. These are both closed back though, meaning they isolate well and don't leak sound, but have a smaller sound stage. If you don't mind people being able to hear what you're listening to, try Sennheiser HD598s if you don't mind Noctua color scheme or AKG Q701s. Open back tends to sound "bigger" and gives the illusion of space at the cost of leaking sound.

Thanks for the suggestions! closed or open doesn't really matter its just to listen to music at my computer and no ones ever around, I use in-ears when i'm on the go. But I do have a very very loud tower.

So I took a look at what you posted, I really like those sennheisers, that 12 – 38,500 Hz range holy crap!

I'll second the Audio-Technica ATH-M50, I've owned mine for several years now (probably 3-4 years) and have recommended several of my friends to get themselves a pair, all of them were immediately sold once they borrowed mine for a few days. For the price, and even for considerably more money, it's tough to beat their honest reproduction of just about any kind of music. They reproduce music with such smoothness that I find myself cranking the volume higher and higher until I realize I'm listening at an absurd level.

I honestly listen to my M50s more often than my Sennheiser HD650s despite the roughly 4x price difference (at least, that's how much more the HD650 was when I bought mine). Closed headphones are great for isolation from surroundings or for listening to music at loud levels without disturbing anyone else, closed-back headphones usually sound boomy, closed-in, or echo-y but the M50s completely avoid this (unless you compare them to a really great open headphone).

I'd suggest the Fidelio X2! I have the HD518 (almost the same as the HD598 but with more bass) and own the HD600 and HE400i but I always end up using the X2 more often than not. It's a great headphone sound and I personally prefer the bass on it and in terms of scaling you don't need an expensive dac / amp for the headphone to shine (unlike the HD600/650).

It really depends on what type of sound you like. I was also looking for a pair of headphones a few months ago. I've heard great things about the Philips X2, but some have said that they don't go super well with rock and metal. I ended up with the NAD Viso HP50, super good "warm" closed headphones that work great with what I listen to (Metal, Metalcore, Post-Hardcore etc). Also they are really easy to drive, so you won't need any expensive equipment in order to enjoy them. However, for some people they can make your head hurt, which they did for me. However, this got better with time when they loosened up a bit.

The other recommendations in this thread are all really good, so don't think you will go wrong with any of these. I would recommend, if possible, to try them out before deciding since sound is a very personal thing.

Again, I will second the M50s. I use M50x's my self with are the same as m50 only with removable cable (get normal m50 if you don't need removable cable and save some money) I've had them for about a years and 2 months and I could not be happier. They sound really good and well balanced. Build quality is also excellent.

I feel people focus on the soundquality alone, for myself, I wont even touch earphones that are on ear, it`s over ear or no thank you.

Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 70 ohm.

Good sound for a closed-back headphone, much better comfort/build quality than the Audio Technica ATH-M50X.
The latter are in no means a bad headphone, but the on-ear/over-ear is a no-brainer for me, the comfort on the beyerdynamics are far superior for my ears.

DT770 Pro 80 ohm have too much bass. you want something like the DT880 Premium 32/250/600 ohm or Sennheiser HD600/650. I know these headphones cost more money but are worth it smile.gif
